The city(las cruces) had turned a 4-lane divided stop and go throughfare into a nice 4 lane freeway. This highway im speaking of us US 70 going N.E. to Alamogordo from the I-25. Whereas Tucson has a population of over 1 Million people and hasn't even completed a NEW freeway. Tucson basically has one major freeway (not new) that doesnt even service a good 80% of the city. It skirts a vast portion of it with the exception being the downtown area. Otherwise the weather is Perfect. It doesnt get to hot or too cold & doesnt have the natural weather disasters: tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. This makes me wonder why the city isnt bigger than it currently is. |

One recent estimate has El Paso/CD Juarez/Las Cruces at around 5,000,000 people by midcentury. Las Cruces, now with a metro of 200,000, could swell to over 500,000 by that time. With its mild, almost subtropical climate and potential access to enormous water supplies, Las Cruces may yet 'take off' like Phoenix and Las Vegas did. But the historical trend has the population doubling every 30 years on average.
