i posted links, since the pics are quite big and pretty slow loading.

Seems like the A1 is not so much "motorway" as known in Western Europe, but then again, this road was build in Soviet times, so it's not that bad. A good quality road and highspeed roads are more important than some emergency lane, and that's what counts.

In the last clip, the road quality reminded me of Kaliningrad

Via Baltica between Tallinn and Pärnu:

An interesting fact: These pics were made from a narrow gauge railway viaduct. That line is the only narrow gauge line in Estonia that is reguraly used.
I found out that actually some parts of Tallinn's ringroad should have motorway standards, atleast by the law.

Latvia seems to have the worst quality of roads among the three Baltic states. But lately there is done quite a lot to change the situation. Here some pictures to show some recently reconstructed roads:

Riga - Jurmala road - construction of pedestrian bridge:

Riga - Sigulda road close to Riga:

Riga airport road:

Sigulda town roundabout:

Via Baltica in Baltezers village:

Saulkrasti road

The new Saulkrasti roundabout (still under construction)

Via Baltica near Iecava

Inside Riga major project is Eastern magistral+Southern bridge - many kilometres of highway bridges and river bridges through the southern part of city:

I myself am working with 30 km long new highway project in Riga - that's true megaproject for Latvia, costs should well exceed 2 billion EUR, multiple tunnels (might be up to 5 km long), long estacade roads, at least 6 three level crossings. But that one will be constructed in may be 9 years.

Yes, it is. But it is also very very complicated - in many areas we should also "construct a road" in national legislation, administrative structure, we should lure in enormous global companies who often are very careful about new markets.

May be I am a bit in high opinion - but it seems that in many aspects this project is seen as innovative in world and as a result has rised high interest in many large international financial institutions in world.
- - -
Here small overview map of Northern Corridor. Project has been divided in four parts. Each of the four parts has got two - three options which all are currently investigated, there is ongoing environment impact assessment and feasibility study for all 12 options. After - when one option for each part will be choosen, will be made additional feasibility study for project as a whole. And then - international tender. Are you ready to invest more than 1 bln EUR, build the thing in possibly short time and maintain ot for some 30 years afterwards - welcome to tender

Note the green part - 2nd segment. One option envisages total tunnel which could be up to 5,6 km long. Little likely that it will be implemented - but there is such possibility. Other two options envisage 60 m high bridges over Daugava - what would be very impressive too.

I checked the financing part and saw that only 7-10 % of the money comes from EU. It's interesting, because Tallinn's ringroad project and some new inner city interchanges are going to be 80% EU financed.

EU hasn't got that so much funds for Latvia in order to provide substantial support for 2 billion infrastructure project. Project gets up to 90 mio EUR from EU and we have to survive with that. We can't ask for some 500 mio EUR from EU thus using large share of total Latvian EU project funds for just one project.

Besides this Riga is well selfsustaining city and most EU infrastructure money goes for national roads, railroads. In general most EU money here will go for education and social things - and not that much for infrastructure. Hope that this is wise longterm decision.

EU fund input in our economy should not be overestimated too - teoretically it may reach up to 4 % of GDP but in reality it is lower. (For comparison - in Soviet times there was the opposite - Latvia like other Baltic republics had to give up 14 - 17% of its yearly GDP to create image of well-being in larger Russian cities)

Lithuanian part of that map is incorrect also. There is no way Lithuania has that many dual-carriegeways

Yeah, the Kaunas - Vilnius section isn't a motorway too, but a motor road. Although it looks quite okay. (see the pics at the top of this page).

Latvia updated:

Lithuania has included all their TEN-T roads in this map, most of them are not dual-carriageway roads.

The network is quite outdated for especially Sweden as well, but also for Denmark and Norway.

I discovered that a user "Olavit" from Flickr has captured the whole road from Tallinn to Pärnu (124km). I'll put some pictures from it here. First pictures are from inside Tallinn:
