Now it's just completely insane, with guys like us. Perhaps it's time to get rid of all the guys that go OT. There we go, Verso, we're dead

This is still close to Tallinn, so it's still 2×2 here. How long is this 2×2 section?

Why bus stops over there. There don't seem to be any access road to the bus stop.

If you look closely you can see a path coming from a forest on the right.

Around 70km.

Yes, this isn't a motorway, but a simple dual carriageway so bus stops are allowed. There are also U-turns in some places and the access is pretty much unlimited. AADT is around 10 000 in that place, but at the end of the 2x2 section it's only 6000.

[7th November already?! Seems like I can change the future...]

A8/E77 Jelgava - Riga

Yesterday I took pictures of a road that connects the largest city of the Baltic countries - Riga (717,371 inhabitants) and my home city Jelgava (4th biggest city in Latvia with 65,000 inhabitants). The distance between the cities are 42 km (40 min. of driving). (To be honest I was driving to Southern bridge opening ceremony ).

I'm starting from the road that goes to my neighbourhood. This is the junction with A8. Riga to the right and the road forward goes to a city Šiauliai (Lithuania).

Driving under A8.

Riga to the left and the road forward goes to a small village Brankas.

Joined the A8. The road yesterday was very quiet, no traffic at all. Probably, everyone are enjoying holidays at their homes.

Yes, were on the right track.

Crossing with a road that connects two small villages Ozolnieki and Brankas.

This roundabout is just temporary.

Bridge over 5th longest river in Latvia, Iecava (136 km).

2x1

The road goes to a 2x2 dual carriage way.

Now were in Riga region.

Olaine city with 15,000 inhabitants and shiny crashbarriers.

Turn to Olaine.

After the turn, were driving through a small town called Jaunolaine (Newolaine).

The town ends.

A new pedestrian bridge was built last year.

Weather was really bad here, a sleet. A8 junction with A5 (Riga bypass). A5 is a 1x1 road that's currently under reconstruction in some sections.

Turn to Salaspils and Tallinn (the capital of Estonia).

Turn to Jurmala and Riga airport. The road is white.

And now were entering Riga.

This is now called Vienības street, but still it's A8.

Ziepniekkalns living massif.

The worst entering in Riga, road was 2x2, now it's 1x1 and after some meters it's again 2x2.

No jams?

Lovely house.

Again 2x2.

We had to take a little detour to avoid traffic jams.

Now were driving parallel Vienības street.

Crossing with the important Kārļa Ulmaņa street (A10).

Now were on 3x3 K.Ulmaņa street (A10), it's more like an ekspressway, because there are no light stops.

Riga TV tower (368.5 m).

Now were driving on Salu tilts (Island bridge) over Daugava river.

A10 junction with A6/E22.

3x3 Krasta street.

Driving over Krasta street.

Joining A6/E22/Krasta street.

Were getting closer and closer to Southern bridge.

Maskavas/Krasta fly-overs.

You all thought you could see Southern bridge so quickly? NOT.
A little snack will do the trick in this full of fun center "Lido" before the Southern bridge opening.

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree...

Yesterday on 17th November, the Southern bridge first was opened for people and before midnight for traffic.
PS: sorry for bad quality, my hands were freezing to death.

That's all.

It's been a while that we've seen lots of pics from Latvia indeed. Looks good. About the first few pics: there seems to be space for 2×2. Is that a future plan?

Does the A by the road number indicates a motorway or just a main road?

What the heck is this??

A means main road in Latvia, if I recall correctly. Like the DK roads in Poland.

Does Latvia have a special character for motorways? Or are there no specific 'motorways' and are all main roads just A-roads?

@PLH: probably some Dutch guy liked kitsch, moved to Latvia and expressed his nationalistic thoughts

This section of road was suposed to be 2x2 in the Soviet times, but when Latvia became independent, there was no money to finish this road.

Chris already explained.

All main roads are indicated with a character "A" (Autoceļš), first class roads are indicated with a character "P" (Pirmās škiras autoceļš), there are no motorways in Latvia, for now, but in the near future there will be and they IMO will be indicated with a character "A" like the main roads, since a motorway in Latvia is called "Automaģistrāle".

Latvia has no motorways anyway.

Great report, Ripley! You finally took some time to picture some Latvian roads, hehe. The A8 doesn't look bad, some kind of an expressway. The weather was significantly worse though, but those indeed shiny crash barriers compensate for it.

I like that urban 6-lane expressway, and the bridge is great, with all new signs. Does it say "Tallina" (for Tallinn) on those two signs by the A8-A5 interchange?

I saw that on Map24; they have written destinations on exits/entrance ramps that appear on signs (not all probably). It's a quite good thing.
