Some more.

And a treat, a colour photo of the foundation work in the 60's.

I'm not sure if these were the shortest lived, but they were most likely the first to be demolished - Oak and Eldon Gardens in Birkenhead, demolished back in 1979: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSGmjjsWmYc.

Yeah, The Bible lists them as being approved in 1956, so that was 23 years between approval and demolition.

I don't think we ever got to the bottom of the shortest-lived blocks. Nottingham's would take some beating. I vaguely recall that large portions of Cantril Farm outside Liverpool went in the early 1980s, but failed to find out if they were tower blocks or not.

Aaah the Bible, someone mentioned that book an awful long time ago. What's it called again?

Of which there are currently two copies of the book for sale on Amazon (none on eBay), starting from £1,699.99

I don't think I've seen that little tower block city in Portsmouth before that ill tonkso posted. Being north of Portsmouth they must have had some nice views over the city and to the sea.

I'd never seen the Portsmouth blocks before. Good stuff.

You can get Tower Block for a measly £390 off abebooks. Looking at my copy debating whether to sell my soul!

Yeah, I've tried finding out more about Cantril Farm and Netherley, but it's like the places never existed. No photos, f**k all info.

[Edit:]

From the never reliable Wikipedia about Cantril:

"Three of the estate's nine tower blocks were demolished, along with some 600 maisonettes and 340 low-rise flats."

The rest remains as Stockbridge Village:

Dont know the name of these towerblocks I took a pic of but they are in Dagenham, which is considered Essex and London.

A pic I took from the DLR of St George's Estate, Whitechapel. Swedenborg Estate it is also known as, either that or one of the towers is. Built about 1968ish.

Netherley flats:

From http://www.atcartlidge.com/2010/08/0...nd-me-of-home/

From http://netherleybridgeinnfcl27.webs....toid=131729147

From http://netherleybridgeinnfcl27.webs....toid=132871853

From http://netherleybridgeinnfcl27.webs....toid=139441617

I came across these whilst looking for info on this building, which turned out to be a pub called The Turtle. If you do a search on this page for the word "turtle", you can see a view of it in the shadow of the flats. The Bible has the Netherley flats listed as follows:

Quote:
Naylorsfield (Netherley, Phase 1), a1965, 2/16 (180), Unit. Netherley, a1967, Phase II Part A [Fulshaw Cl, Bruen Cl, Pavely Bank, Yeoman Fold], 11/8 (977), Wimpey (under demol); Phase II Part B [Glebe Hey, Peckmill Green, Brittarge Brow], 5/8 (337), Unit (demol).
I think "Unit" refers to Unit/Camus.

I've done some digging, and the ones that were demolished were called The Withens, and were "a1967 3/22 (516) Unit (Camus) (demol)". There used to be photos online of some derelict-looking high-rise in Cantril Farm which must have been these as the design was different from the other six, but the photos and website seems to have disappeared.

Anyone aware of small british (or irish) towns with tall tower blocks ?
I already know about the Kincardine flats in Scotland, and about that one 20 floors tower in some little welsh town (I don't remember the name), but I was wondering if any of you knew about other examples ?

Talking about short-lived blocks, there's Tower Hill, Kirkby, started 1969, demolished in 1982:

Are you thinking about Cwmbrân? It has one at 22-storeys:

There's also this smaller one in Merthyr Tydfil and these three in Flint

Lichfield in Staffordshire is quite a small town (actually, it's a small cathedral city) with six tower blocks. They're not that big but they're also not quite what you'd expect in such a small, historic and pretty place!

There's four of these in a row:

Then there's these two blocks a short distance away.

I know the first lot are privately owned and fetch quite a bit of money as you see them for sale on Rightmove.
