Mr D invades Riga ( the 2007 S&B meet up )

Hi guys ( and gals? )... as some of you might know us happy chaps at the S&B part of the forum ( Scandinavian and Baltic ) have an anual tradition with a meet up.. and this year Riga was the lucky city - or actually us chaps were the lucky ones - 'cuz Riga is one lovely city!

This was my first trip to eastern Europe and I wasn't really sure what to expect... but I was pleasently surprised!
You do see poverty and you do see places in dire need of renovation and investments - but you also see some of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen and some very nice streetscapes too!

The trip has been a real eyeopener for me and now I can't wait to explore more of the lands of our friends in the east!

Anyway it's time for the pics... but before we get to that I'd like to share a link to the OFFICIAL RIGA MEET UP THREAD with lots of pics, stories and information from all us jolly beerloving S&B chaps!

Link: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=501952

And now for the pics...

The lack of people boils down to 3 things...

1. I normally don't want to have people in my pics hence I take pictures without them... ( you'll find all my city pics to be like that )

2. Many of the pics were taken on a sunday in a residential area...

3. While Riga isn't a small city it's not Tokyo either and the downtown ( "old town" ) doesn't really function as an "active and normal" downtown, it's more touristy and historic..

I'm kind of the same way... I prefer to wait till most people have passed before I take my photos if I am concentrating on the building. And, I like to photograph during slow periods, too, usually. Freki, we have not seen photos from you in some time! How is winter going this year in Denmark?

This is beautiful thread, even I (who live in Riga) can found some unseen angles and views here.

How come I hadn't seen this thread before? Riga looks lovely, love the pics. The weather was amazing. The city seems to have a very nice mix of architecture: in some areas it looks a lot like Helsinki, in others, like some German cities. Nice place, might go there in my next Euro tour
