You paint an attractive picture citruspastels. I think that's exactly what will happen. But aren't there already several places open in the evening, ranging from restaurants/bars to coffee shops?

There are places open, but they aren't exactly classy. I think citruspetals is talking about places that would be similar to the Belltown Bistro or Cafe Juanita, not the Red Hen (Greenlake country western bar).

That, and a few midrise condo buildings would help too.

Thought I'd get a few updates with my new toy (apologize for any crookedness, my dog was pulling on me):

Florera: just about done. They were moving in appliances while I was taking pictures.

Phase 2 is planned for the site currently occupied by the sales office (20-25 more condos to bring the total to 80). Anyone heard anything on when/if this will start?

Old Albertsons site redevelopment (Alexan Greenlake) Just starting foundation work:

construction crane went up within the last few days too:

Vitamilk Dairy Redevelopment:
Word from my apartment manager is that the original developer sold the site to another developer. I don't know what that means if they're completely redesigning the project, switching contractors, or just sifting through paperwork. Either way, they finished excavation about 2 months ago, and the sites just been sitting idle ever since. Anyone know anything about whats going on?

Other projects:
Notice for 2 proposed apartment buildings caddy corner to the southwest of the old ablertsons (the house and the two buildings on woodlawn would be demolished):

Another proposal for the site that Spuds sits on (blue building in background. Right across the street from albertsons site):

all of these are just a block down from the other 3 big developments:

Look at that last picture. The fucking idiots at the City decided a while back that power poles ought to be three feet from the curb. So these fucktards have blocked half the sidewalk here. Last I heard the federal standard was two feet and the City was exceeding it for some stupid reason like caring more about liability than pedestrians.

Speaking of power poles, wouldn't it be a dream come true if utility companies undergrounded all overhead power lines?

Alexan Updates

The Alexan (old Albertsons) is moving along pretty well. 2 months since I took the first picture when they were first starting foundation work, and now they are setting up forms for the street level floors.

P.S. The former Vitamilk Dairy site is still sitting untouched. Anyone heard whats going on with this? Thats a pretty gaping hole in the ground to leave for another couple years.

The latest Green Lake Community Council meeting notes said something to the effect that Metropolitan Market had pulled out and they were trying to get a solid retail tenant, ideally a grocer, before proceeding. They were hoping to restart in the spring, if I recall correctly.

It seems like it could be a good spot for a smallish, upscale grocer (given lines at the nearby Whole Foods and the neighborhood demographics) -- I'm not sure why Metropolitan Market pulled out.

who knows? Up coming recession? close proximity to 3 other grocers? Maybe they could get a Trader Joes or a PCC?

Since there's been a bit of talk about the Ballard Denny's being torn down, I feel I should also mention that another abandoned building that used to house a popular Seattle restaurant has also been torn down in Greenlake (welll... Roosevelt). The old Scarlett Tree building at 66th and Roosevelt was reduced to rubble a few weeks ago, and all that remains is the foundation. They even had a sale of the old bricks this past weekend. July 7th is the second design review for the building that will replace it:

It's great to see it happening! Greenlake is getting close to a critical mass, along with the heavy number of park users.

I rode my bike through the area yesterday. Who needs a pump when bike stores like Gregg's let you fill up for free? It was a little rainy for a moment but what a beautiful area.

Obviously people come to SSC to hear about my bikerides on the bike I recently fixed up after not using it for several years. Well, yesterday was possibly the longest ride of my life. LQA to Fremont, up Stone Way, zigzag through neighborhood streets to Gregg's, east then north to Wedgewood, continuing north along the rim of the hill while not finding an obvious route down to the Burke Gilman despite a couple sidetrips, eventually to Lake City Way where after a fantastic long downhill I found the trail, then along the Burke Gilman. I should have taken the first road south to Juanita, but I didn't trust my guess on that, so kept going on the trail, which became the Samammish Slough Trail. Eventually Downtown Redmond, which I did a circle around (actually getting pretty dense and nice, and very walkable!). Then a mistaken trip to the Bear Creek area, where I decided I'd gone the wrong way. Back to Redmond, cross the slough, then south on West Lake Samammish Parkway, then right on Bel-Red Road, through Downtown Bellevue, south on 112th, up a hill that's a shortcut (sort of) to the I-90 trail, then back to town, and back to LQA via 3rd and 4th Aves and the Seattle Center. All things considered my guess is 42-45 miles including sidetrips. I didn't have water so I lived for drinking fountains. Actually I bought a lock at Gregg's but put it on my seat post and didn't take the time to figure it out, so I couldn't leave my bike. Actually2, this was much harder (hills) than anything I ever do at the gym, and suggested that I'm not in very good shape, as some of the bigger hills reduced me to near walking speeds and general inertia for minutes afterward in some cases.

I'd really like to see more use of the green triangle to the northeast of the Albertson's project -- it's one of the few spaces we have in this area that could really be used as a public square -- it's got mature trees, sits in an area with a ton of pedestrian traffic and largely slow car traffic and seems like it could be great for summer outdoor coffee shop/restaurant seating, etc. But right now it's just isolated trees and grass that a few runners run through.

Since nobody got hurt, no, just right!

But I'd love the culprit to get skewered on one.
