2+1 in Ireland: examples

The N24 Fiddown/Piltown bypass near Waterford was one of the pilot 2+1 schemes in Ireland. As a previous poster mentioned, these have mostly been superceded by 2+2 for new build.

Speed limit is 100 km/h (typically).

The newer build roads that don't merit a full motorway profile now get this 2+2 (with no hard shoulder) cross-section:

Sibiu - Sebeș (52 km) road in Romania is in some parts 2+1. You can watch a video I made last month:

Great video! Most sections of that road looks wide enough to put up a barrier. That way both safety AND speed limit could be increased!

In Romania barriers are not efficient on 2+1 roads, because there are many old trucks and Dacias that go veeeeeeery slow. If you get stuck with such a car in front of you for few km and you can't pass then you have a problem.

later edit: look what is happening on this 2+1 road:

Damn, something you think these guys want to cause an accident on purpose.

Changing driver's behavior is a long and slow progress.

This is one of the crazyest road-movies I have ever seen.
  • 0:06 - Skoda passing
  • 0:29 - Skoda passing again
  • 0:31 - our camera-guy is going a little bit on the opposite direction
  • 0:45 - VW Golf passing
  • 0:50 - favorite scene - crazy truck driver
  • 1:03 - our camera-guy is going again on the wrong lane (maybe he tought that there is going to be an accident and he wanted to catch it live)
  • 1:08 - crazy truck driver nearly hits that Dacia Logan Van
  • 1:12 - crazy truck driver nearly hits that Skoda
  • 1:33 - truck passing another truck... so boooooooooooring
  • 1:48 - truck nearly hits a homeless dog

Irish 2+1 roads were introduced using the Swedish design as a basis.

Oh my god. How many accidents happen on that road? Must be at least 100 a year, right?

The thought that those guys can drive into our country makes me worry...

Greetings,
Glodenox

I don't worry about that. They know western European fines are high and they can't afford that. Secondly, nearly all Polish / Romanian / Bulgarian cars I see driving in the Netherlands generally drive behaved. The only problem you have are intoxicated drivers (but it's not like the Dutch are saints when it comes to that!)

Chris is right. ALL eastern-europe drivers behave well on western europe roads, because they know that the fines are high and they will get one if they deserve! Since I live in Romania near the Hungarian border and I travel quite often to our neighbour country I saw many crazy romanian drivers that were driving like Schumacher in Romania, but after the border I passed some of them because they were going 10 km/h under the speed limit because they feared the fines.

Example of 2+1 road in Sweden without barrier.

I suppose most of 2+1 roads in Sweden have fence?

I've never seen a swedish 2+1 road without fence that wasn't either unfinished or with a climbing lane. So I would assume that this is rather rare. Shouldn't be too expensive or difficult to add a wire to that road.. Maybe the local road department will.

Yeah pretty interesting for Swedish 2+1 roads. I see this for the first time in Sweden as well. Well the important thing is that most of them have fence.
