Generally, 2+1 roads in Turkey are used for turning lanes, maintenance, ramps etc.

Also Bosphorus Bridge set as 4+2 sometimes for traffic/maintenance.

Several days ago I drove on A303 in Western England. Ilminster by-pass, which is part of it, has been opened in 1988. It has 3 lanes mostly surfaced with concrete. The road seems to be perfectly maintained but very congested.

You can overtake into the oncoming lane if you're on the x1 side of the road on our ones, but the traffic is generally low enough to make this unnecessary.

(EDIT: For those wondering where that is - N1 between the Molenaar River Valley and Worcester.)

We don't have these roads 2+1 with allowed overtaking but they do in Cezch rep. and Hungary. It is a bit weird for me.

On US 319 between Tifton and Moultrie, Georgia, there's an intersting variation on the 2+1 concept:

For a few miles near Tifton and Moultrie, the road is 2+1+2: two lanes in each direction plus a two-way left turn lane in the center, which is a very common configuration in Georgia and most of the US.

Passing through the small towns of Omega and Norman Park, it's 1+1+1: one lane in each direction plus a two-way left turn lane in the center. Sidewalks and curb and gutter were added or improved when the three-laning was done.

Everywhere else, it's 2x2 with a four foot painted median, which... the FHWA recommends at least this type of separation for 2+1 roadways. It's like a 2+1 except that there's no place where there are actually two lanes in one direction and one in the other. Occasionally the median widens to a left turn pocket for safer turns onto intersecting roads, but that's rare.

There are at least three places in Georgia where this configuration was used, one being US 84 between Hinesville and I-95-- I can't remember the other. Built during the late '80's when funding was scarce, apparently it was not regarded as a success; the Thomasville-Moultrie section of US 319 was fived-laned all the way, though admittedly the small towns along that stretch were better able to accomodate such a wide roadway.

Actually, the whole stretch of US 319 between Tifton and Tallahassee is intersting in that four different methods were used over a 15 year period to achieve the same goal of creating a 2x2 highway throughout the corridor. Back when I was more energetic, I took photos for an SSC feature about it. Who knows? Maybe I'll post them someday.

Morocco : Agadir - Marrakech

Between Argana and Amskroud some parts of RN8 Agadir-Marrakech, have been enlarged to 3 ways and in the same time highway works have began (know finish).

Let me present a few pictures of 2+1 roads in Poland

Road number 17 between Lublin and Warsaw
(author: khan_tengri, http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=1134)
Note the old broken lines which used to mark hard shoulder before the repainting

Road number 8 between Wrocław and Warsaw

The 2+1 setup is definitely much safer than the wide 1x2 setup with shoulders which turns the road into a de-facto 1x4 setup where it wasn't designed for.

I think I got your point. A risky road is this 1+1 with very wide lanes in Romania between Cluj and Dej:
