we, in romania, are quite used to drive good cars on bad roads, even forest roads.I, for example, drove a skoda octavia in may, after a heavy rain, on a forest road near Vatra-Dornei, for 20kms, with uphill sections of up to 15%.i even passed through a river with that car.

^ Ok, I wouldn't cross a river by Škoda Octavia. The rest sounds doable though. (last time I tried it, I lost the exhaust pipe )

Interesting, Romanian is not very hard to read for me. I recognize about 30 - 50% of the words used.

Some time ago, someone told me that written Romanian is quite understandable when you know some english/french/italian. I thought he was lying, but having looked at some Romanian myself, and I have to acknowlegde that he's right

Why is the Transilvania Highway planned so far from Cluj-Napoca? According to map from the webpage it runs about 10km from Cluj. I think it's not a good idea...you'll need some feeder there. In Czech republic, there is also one example. D1 and Jihlava. http://www.mapy.cz/#[email protected][email protected][email protected]=ZP But that highway was planned during communism

I think the reason is that surely the metropolitan area of Cluj is going to extend, so it's actually good that they avoid urban areas. There will be though a smaller motorway (planned, for the moment) Cluj-Dej-Bistrita that is going to pass very close to the city limits (some actually call it "autostrada urbana" - i think i don't have to translate the term)

It is situated at 1440 m altitude, being the highest resort in Romania. It lies in a conifers forest, and it is a popular winter destination and in the summer it is sought for its calm, there's always snow and skiing lessons for its fresh air and for the easily accessible trekking routes.

Again, even if it's an important touristic road, don't expect it to be in a good shape. And we are asking ourselves why Romania is avoided by the majority of tourists...

This road is under reconstruction and enlargement currently. This I know from last year when I went skiing there. The resort - Paltinis - needs also some serious investment. It really lags behind the Prahova Valey resorts.
