DN2 is mostly not a 4-lane highway. It has wide shoulders that act as de-facto 1x4 lanes, but it isn't a real 2x2 road for the most part.

By the way, if that is an svg-file, it would be great to make a road quality map like they have in Bulgaria or Poland

Great map
I'm wondering about Bucharest's motorway ring-road, isn't there any construction happening there right now?

specs:

* northern arc: 52,8 km
* southern arc: 48,0 km
* full loop: 100,8 km
* cost: € 1 870 million

It will probably constructed if Romania's state budget allows it. Not sure if it is eligible for EU funding. It was originally planned to start construction in 2010, but it didn't came into fruition yet.

No Bucharest motorway ring, not by a LONG shot! It's planned to be a PPP contract.

So, it's official as of tonight people:

Quote:
Romania To Terminate Contract With Bechtel For 300 Km Of Transylvania Hwy

Romania will terminate its contract with constructor Bechtel for 300 km of the Transylvania Highway on which work has not yet started, sources in the Ministry of Transport told online newspaper gandul.

Bechtel will only complete its current work on two sections: 2B - Campia Turzii-Gilau and 3C - Suplacu de Barcau-Bors. The sections together make up 118 km of the highway's planned 415 km.

According to the sources, an official announcement should come Wednesday, or Thursday at the latest.

Bechtel officials have declined to comment, but said they were working on an official statement, to be issued later.

The construction of the Transylvania Highway, which links central Brasov to western Bors on the Hungarian border, began in 2004 with a EUR2.2 billion contract awarded to U.S. constructor Bechtel. The highway is designed to be 415 kilometers long, but only 52 kilometers have been built so far.

Romanian public road authority CNADNR's debts to Bechtel amounted to EUR90.4 million in May, plus 90.3 million lei (EUR21.32 million) in VAT payments.
Source

Prices have been cut down to EUR 7 mil/km for the sections yet to be executed by Bechtel, from over EUR 10 mil/km. No early termination damages will be claimed by Bechtel.

Tenders can now be started on the terminated sections.

Well done Mrs. Ministress!

That's really surprising. I honestly thought some sections had already been opened, with more U/C

Its kind of weird that a city the size of Bucharest doesn't already have such a motorway ring or at least a part of it ... in Belgrade for example, construction has dragged on for almost three decades but we may finally see the most important half of it completed by the end of 2013.

Other major cities of former Yugoslavia already have them - Ljubljana has a full 40km motorway ring, Skopje has a 25km northern motorway bypass, Sarajevo is in the midst of building one, while Zagreb is even planning a second ring now.

They opened the north section of the ring at 2x2 express (or most of it) on 20 km and it's a long shot to be qualified as a busy road. Frankly, we don't need a Bucharest motorway ring now, but other sections on A1 and A3.

As, for Bucharest proper, it's planning 2 more inner rings (apart from the existing one which is different from the main one referred to above, and the planned motorway ring), but those are a different thing and are not shown on the map. Technically, Bucharest should have in total 5 rings (2 existing and in use, 1 partial functional, and 2 more TBO).

These are the 4 Bucharest rings, which are different from the motorway ring shownin the general motorway map:

Of course, different cities have different needs.

Heck, up to recently, there was hardly any traffic on the still freshly opened sections of Belgrade's bypass...until that is, the reconstruction of Gazelle bridge (160k AADT) as well as the motorway through Belgrade began. Now, we can't build the new sections fast enough.

Btw, Bucharest seems to have a great setup with the many inner & outer rings, very similar to that of Moscow. It would be nice to see some video footage of a drive through the city along one of those rings.

I should have made some pictures last week when I waited in a queue of about 5km on Bucharest belt ring.

I bet it was on the non-expanded sections, because on the current 2x2 there are no traffic jams.

I haven't seen one so far. I guess we'll have to look around if there is any actually. From the map, the most inward one and the most outward ones are closed (with the most outward going through expansions at 2x2 express), the next one from the outward ring is currently in planning for construction, while the 3rd from the outward ring is curently in plans for closing with under- and over-passes (including with the recently opened Basarab).

This is extremely substandard for a city of 2 million:

As I mentioned, the rest of ring sections will be expanded to 2x2, as it happened for the following section of ring. For this particular section, there is a contract for expansion works.

In order to clarify a possible confusion, see below the poject of the new motorway ring of Bucharest (with red) which has not been yet started and the existing (NOT motorway) ring-road (with blue) which is in course of extension to 2x2:

I don't think people are confused. I explained that the motorway ring is the outer city ring on the general motorway map.

Indeed, its all very well explained. Thanks guys

So now I'm wondering, what is the earliest possible date that construction might start on this planned motorway ring?

It's not a priority, as I said, because traffic doesn't warrant it yet. IMO, until the A1 is completed (that is 2015-2016), there is no need of a Bucharest motorway ring. When A1 is completed, what will be needed is a section of the Bucharest ring (1/2 of it), that is the northern by-pass to connect A1, A3 and A2.
