Romanian Transport Minister : 531 km of (motorways U/C) are budgeted for 2012
BUSINESS | IRINA POPESCU | OCTOBER 3, 2011 AT 2:19 PM

The Romanian Ministry of Transport has budgeted 531 km of highway for next year, according to Minister Anca Boagiu, quoted by Agerpres. She added that the Ministry has a draft budget for 2012, but has also one for the next years until 2015.

“In 2012 we have budgeted all the kilometers that are in execution, the 276 km that are to be financed and the 183 km that will go into execution, while the next step is to launch the amount we have saved from previous contracts for another 72 km,” said the Romanian ministry of Transport.

Anca Boagiu added that money were asked from the Ministry of Finance for the existing projects, but the essential for the Ministry of Transport is “to have money for co-financing the European funding to come in the near future”, according to Agerpres.

It'd be interesting where the Transport Ministry decides to allocate the saved money for those 72 km to be tendered soon.

Timisoara - Lugoj is already U/C? Or only a part of it?

Only first Lot (9,5km). For the second Lot (25,6km) the result of the tender is still disputed and the contract wasn't awarded to any company. And that's unfortunate. A long dry summer was lost in vain.

timisoara lugoj

Here's one:

orange - existing motorways
yellow - U/C to be delivered by the end of this year
green - works just started
dark blue - to be tendered soon
light blue - presumably U/C

PS: Comarnic-Fagaras (the mountain crossing section of A3) willl be retendered this fall according to a Governmental memorandum

The south section of A0 is in preparations for tender

No.
There were some articles in newspapers about a Timisoara - Belgrade highway, but no official intention from the minister.

My feeling is that (no matter what government in place) next 10 years Romania will still work on highways connecting Bucharest to the border with Hungary (priority 1) and possibly highways to Moldova region (not Republic of Moldova).

Yes, Romania and Italy are political sponsors for Corrdior XI in EU. Which means there is a plan for a motorway connecting Timisoara with Serbia, but there is no financial commitment as of yet.

I don't agree with daniel that the Gov will wait to complete the motorways connecting to Hungary and Republic of Moldova before starting anything on that section (or any other alternative section). I say, depending on the financial priorities and availabilities, that section may be completed until 2020. It's only a 70 km stretch in the plains.

OK, if Serbia enters EU, then MAYBE Romania will build its part of Timisoara - Belgrade highway, with EU money hopefully.

But for now, AFAIK, there is no commitment from the minister to this highway.

Currently, there is no financial commitment but there is a political commitment. Of course it depends on the money availability, which Romania doesn't have right now in excess. However, it does not depend on Serbia getting in the EU because there are EU funds earmarked for inter-border cooperation and those can be used including for such projects.

But I agree that the Romanian Gov has bigger priorities in terms of motorway until 2020. That's why I said if money is available in excess for that section, maybe from EU border cooperation financing, then it could be built by 2020. Romania is currently buidling various projects with EU border cooperation money, including with Serbia.

There is no need for a highway from Timisoara to Serbia because the traffic is very low. But there is a plan of highways that say there will be one till 2035. Usually all the heavy traffic from western will come through Szeget - Belgrad.

Unfortunately Romanian strategy regarding highways also keep in mind about the traffic which is nonconstructive. The other problem is that Romanian population is distributed uniformly and tends to establish villages along with the roads. This makes impossible or very hard the expropriations. Engineers here know, you just exit a village just to enter in another one after 1km. This way speeds are as low as ~50km/h even if no one is respecting this rule (see Romanias first place in europe on accidents).

So, everything here was engineered and created very bad from the beginning. Without mentality changing, we wont have planned highways not even in 2035.

No citizens os Romania want to leave the territory of the EU, furthermore if Romania enters the Schengen aggrement it will be more evident. No citizens of Romania want to start debate with any serbian border guard, or custom officer!
So they will trewell for a long period via Nagylak-Szeged-Budapest.
If Serbia will enter the EU, and the Schenge aggrement, there will be a demand for Arad(Oradea)-Versec(Вршац , Vršac, Werschetz, Vârşets)-Belgrád(Beograde) connection, for the EU internal transport between Romania and the South-west Mediterrain.
