Last September I took some pictures of the A1 Bucharest- Pitesti motorway, first that was built in Romania during the communist times.

Exiting Bucharest to A1:

Horrible same-level interchange at the beginning of the motorway:

On A1 entering Ilfov county:

Small distance sign:

Missing fence

On this motorway there are a lot of people stopped on the hard shoulder because they have different "emergencies":

Overpass u/c:

Electronic signage. Nothing special that day, so it was showing just the temperature (don't you miss 25 C? )

Another "emergency":

Argeș county:

Hitchhiking:

Distance sign that IMO it's not very well placed. People entering the motorway should be careful to merging the first lane on the motorway, not reading distance signs:

Important exit to the southern route to western Romania:

Pitesti bypass:

End of the motorway

This last corner is quite dangerous although it's well signalised:

Here are some pictures I took in December, the second day after the opening of A1 motorway between Timisoara and Arad (map). I'll just quote my posts from the Romanian thread because I'm too lazy to translate them in english right now:

Thanks for the pics. Didn't you already post some of the other direction (AR -> TM) when you uploaded the videos?

Do you know when the junction of A1 and DJ691 at Giarmata is finished? Link OSM

nice pics!
There are two things I don't understand:
- what is the sense of signing Vărsand all the way?
- what is the sense of signing settlements in the opposite direction? (like Bucuresti on "old" A1 at the interchange with DN7 near Pitesti, when you are coming from Bucuresti, or Timisoara at exit Arad Sud, when coming from Timisoara...)

Maybe it indicates the two destinations you reach when driving in one or the other direction on DN7. For example DN73 starts near that junction, therefore only Brasov is indicated.

Yes, I've uploaded pics back then from the other direction (AR -> TM), and now they are TM -> AR.

Giarmata interchange, Arad-Zădăreni interchange, Arad-Airport interchange and Arad bypass - full profile motorway will be completed by May 2012.

I would have chose Oradea instead of Vărșand (which is a border crossing town between Romania and Hungary, near Gyula)

I have no ideea who was the dumb guy that decided it's good to sign towns that you have already passed...

1) Not all drivers arriving at that interchange are coming from Bucharest.
They may come from villages nearby Pitesti, for example.
2) you could drive on the last km of A1 Bucharest - Pitesti and you MAY want to go on DN7 Pitesti - Bucharest (not necessarily to Bucharest), which is a different road and passes through different cities.

I heard on the news the new Gov has a committed target for this year for the opening of 200 km motorways. Can anyone confirm?
