Yes, it'll be fully ready by next year. In fact, it'll be opened half-profile by this July, and then completed entirely sometime until next spring.

I don't really get this. AFAIK Arad bypass is part of the A1 motorway, which will lead to the Hungarian border. So why will the Arad bypass overpass the motorway towards Hungary? I thought these motorways were the same.

A1 runs through a TOTSO* at Arad-West.

Yeah, one day the bypass will be continued north as an expressway to Oradea.

Back in 2008 there was planned the Arad-Oradea expressway, with full-motorway profile between Arad and Chisineu-Cris & Salonta - Oradea, and a normal 2-lanes per direction road between Chisineu-Cris and Salonta. Look at this map to see how the motorway/expressway network of western Romania should have looked if all the plans from those years would have been completed.

Unfortunately we all know that this will not happen even in the next 20 years, unless some miracle happens. Same thing happen with the Baia Mare-Vaja(HU) expressway, just a waste of public money on the feasibility studies.

Unfortunatelly, there is no EU support for such project, so I agree with you there is little chance to be done in the coming 20 years, considering the amount of work to be done on TEN-T motorway projects. However, it could be done as a privately financed project, having in mind the good economic prospects of the western region, but we have had no success so far in PPPs. But there is still time to try.

January 2013 was the contractual deadline ... once they open it half-profile, there will be some delays in works, at least over the summer so I don't believe it'll be ready by the deadline because of this. Half-profile opening is also not common in construction agreements, so the contractor may get an extention for the difficulties caused by the earlier opening for traffic at half-profile.

There is no Eu support because there wasn t Romanian Gov support for that !! Bucharest has no interest to modernise the infrastructure in Maramures and Satu Mare and to tie the north west part of Ro to the Hungarian highways.Maramures is projected to remain still ,like an Indian reservation (poverty, Middle Age panorama = no hope for young people).
As the PPP s....let s not discuss anymore...CJ Maramures and Satu Mare tried already to do this...and no result. At all.

I am not sure that is the reason. The reason is that there are all kinds of priorities, such as to build first the motorway core, which is in itself a decade long task. For the 2014-2020 EU financial cycle, there is nearly not enough money from EU to build the remaining core corridors, ley alone start other projects. Maybe from 2020 on, when CIV and CIX will be (hopefully) completed, another Gov will include that part of the country into a motorway network. I think it is the right decision to complete what it was started on CIV and work on CIX rather than put the money in all directions at a time and complete nothing, because there is not enough co-financing for the corridors as the money go from 15% financing to 100% financing, as it happened with the prioritization of Transylvania Motorway over CIV, and hence the current delays in CIV.

According to the Transport Minister, Romania will start works on Timişoara-Belgrade, Mureș-Iași-Ungheni, Bucureşti-Craiova-Calafat motorways in 2014*.

*The current Transportation Minister will not probably be the same in 2014.

In fact, since you wrote this, the Transport Minister, together with the entire RO gov. was dissmised.

Yes, indeed! And this bodes "well" for the motorway projects!

So, the new Government (opposition) will inaugurate close to 200 km of new motorway this year, after doing nothing for that.

So much for the "secret" weapon of the fallen government!
