The National Road Company is due to tender on Monday, 20 August, the remaining sections of A1*, as well as a short section of A3, in value of approx EUR 1 billion and totalling 106 km, as follows:

A1: Timisoara-Lugoj, LOT 2 / 25.6 km / estimated EUR 5.3 m per km

A1: Lugoj-Deva, LOT 2 / 28.6 km / estimated EUR 9.3 m per km

A1: Lugoj-Deva, LOT 3 / 21.14 km / estimated EUR 9.3 m per km

A1: Lugoj-Deva, LOT 4 / 22.14 km / estimated EUR 10.5 m per km

A3: Gilau-Nadaselu / 8.7 km / estimated EUR 8 m per km

Price is expected to drop a lot as a result of tendering procedures.

* Bar Pitesti-Sibiu which will cause a party when tendered.

1. I've heard that RO media is speculating about a motorway Lugoj - Craiova. Since I know that a feasability study on this route is due to be ready this autumn, what is the chance that CNADNR has some early information on the results of this servey?

2. Does Aciliu in RO mean Achilles? Sounds plausible to me.

Don't get too excited. I don't think that motorway will be built soon...

No. Achilles = Ahile.

There is no speculation about a motorway there, it's a minister of transportation project proper on Corridor IV (south branch). I haven't heard of a feasibility study there and it's not clear when it will be done and with what money considering that the Transportation Ministry plans to use most of EU money during 2014-2020 financial cuycle for Pitesti-Sibiu (~ EUR 3 billion cost).

According to historians, it comes from the Roman patrician family of "Acilia".

Any chance of a motorway or expressway between Craiova and Pitesti then? Even with much more kms detour, it looks not a bad route going from Danube bridge 2 through Craiova-Pitesti-Sibiu-Lugoj on complete motorway instead of the mountainous road through all of the villages on the direct route Drogbeta-Tunru Severin - Lugoj.

The direct road E70 is not at all bad and it bypasses Turnu Severin, Caransebes, Lugoj and Timisoara. Also there is a bypass at Domasnea, but there are some problems there and the bypass is closed for the moment, but they are working to solve the problems as we speak. You can easily get a 80kph average speed from Drobeta to Timisoara. The road has a high traffic only between Lugoj and Timisoara, but there is a motorway uc or prepared for tender there.

Thank you for your information.

About an year ago an article about the start of this feasibility study was posted here. It's deadline was autumn this year as I said.

I think there's little chance because it has no EU financing commitment as it's not caught on TEN-T or any panEuropean corridors.

Though it has been discussed recently especially for industrial reasons (half of million or more cars exports in the region from Dacia and Ford plants), there is no financing for that section for now.

Timisoara-Lugoj LOT1 (10 km) will open this fall. LOT2 of Timisoara-Lugoj (25 km) will be tendered next week hopefully.

Edit: I think you are referring to the so-called South Motorway which is supposed to link Bucharest with Timisoara through the south of the Carpathians, through Craiova and Lugoj, and have as well a connection with Calafat-Vidin bridge. This is a motorway that is promoted by the new Gov, and they indeed plan a fesability study for that section, to include it into the 2014-2020 EU financing budget (the section has been approved for TEN-T). It is unclear yet whether the Gov will be able to obtain financing for that, and for the Sibiu-Pitesti section of A1. We need at least EUR 6 billion from the EU for these motorways during 2014-2020 (roughly more than double Romania got for 2007-2013), and this is unlikelly to be supported by the EU which aims at reducing the costs. Anyway, these are things which are under heavy negotiations this fall at the Commission.

Here's a map for the South Motorway (A6) with Craiova-Calafat included:

There are also plans for a speedway in between Craiova and Pitesti, but that is without EU funding so it's unlikelly for the moment.

This would mean the entire A1 section from Sibiu to Nadlac would have contracters, right?

Do you have some information how much traffic it goes through Calafat-Szeged road?

I don't know the exact AADT, but I travelled the section from Drobeta Turnu Severin to Timisoara last tuesday and it was very pleasant, excepting the section Lugoj-Timisoara, which was quite crowded. That's because at Lugoj traffic from Drobeta merges with that from Deva and local traffic, to make DN6 (E70) quite busy. Average speed was about 80kph.

So, all sections received bids yesterday. We'll learn of the winners next month if there are no objections.
