I'm looking for some advice on the best routing from Belgrade in Serbia to Constanta in Romania, for travel in early August. I know of several people who have made this trip in the past and have crossed the SRB-RO border either at Drobeta (Severin) or via the new bridge between BG and RO at Vidin/Calafat and then gone via Craiova.

However, as there are constant upgrades and new openings of various sections of the new motorways in RO, I wonder if there is now a faster option. I have done the drive between Belgrade and Sibiu a few times (via Timisoara and over the mountain pass/Deva ) and whilst scenic, isn't exactly efficient timewise!

Many thanks for your help in advance,
Robert

Your idea seems to be the best. From Bucharest you have the entire A2 motorway to Constanta completed
There are some new sections of motorway opened BUT none of witch cross the mountains so that's an issue. Go trough the south as much as possible

Definitely choose Drobeta Turnu Severin for entering Romania, it's the fastest route and has the best quality road overall. You can bypass Drobeta and Craiova and use national road 65 to reach A1 near Pitesti. The most problematic section will be Craiova-Pitesti (DN65), as it's full of trucks and you can't bypass Bals and Slatina, but once you reach A1 it's smooth driving all the way to Constanta. And don't forget to use THE NORTH half of Bucharest bypass. Parts of it are U/C, but it's partly 2x2 and A LOT faster than the southern part. You might go straight through the city, but only if you arrive at non-peak hours, after 20:00 and before 7:00 .

Have a nice trip!

Some good news from our side. The National Road and Motorway National Company just lauched the tender for the rest of the motorway between Campia Turzii and Targu Mures, part of the A3, more specifically between Ogra (near Iernut) and Targu Mures. There are 2 lots: lot 1, Targu Mures - Ungheni (aiport) + link road to Targu Mures and lot 2 Ungheni - Ogra. The really weird thing is that the builder is expected to finish construction in just YEAR!! And the project is not design&build, strangely.

NB: the other lots already tendered were Ogra-Iernut (~3km, due to weird Bechtel style of designing sections, has no use on its own), Iernut-Chetani and Chetani-Campia Turzii.

Thank you kindly for that advice - much appreciated! I'm looking forward to driving on the A1. We're going in a 260hp Alfa 159 so if overtaking of trucks is required on the DN65, then I'm well equipped for that

A1 at the Hungarian border only. Lugoj-Deva until late 2015 (+ x).

He asked about A1 near Nadlac.
(I think also that Campia Turzii-Targu Mures will be ready before Suplacu de Barcau-Bors.)

Why does no one update this thread?

Also, you should change the completion date for A3 BucharestRing- Bucharest to "unknown", since the contract was recently cancelled and requires retendering for finishing the last 2km of the motorway.

A3 Comarnic-Brasov is dead, but works started on A3 Gilau-Mihaiesti.
