No, it wasn't open. And no one knows for sure if it will be open in near future or not.

As I have told you above, no one knew when it would happen. So today we are just finding out that this is the day. 15 km (or so) of new motorway were open minutes ago between Dumbrava and Margina (western Romania, part of A1). This is the official statement, in roumanian, but don't mind those kilometers mention above since they ar enot real (part of them are stil under construction or yet to be tender - final 6 kilo that will include some tunnels).

If I'm correct this also brings the opened A1 'mileage' to over 400 kilometers.

Galați

I found this interesting bridge in Galați. It's a pretty long bridge, just over 1 kilometer. It serves a massive industrial complex on the west side of Galați. I couldn't find good photos because I don't know the actual name of the bridge. I wonder when it was built.

Great that this finally happened... Can't wait to drive on it in the summer :-)

Unfortunately, they didn't think of providing any temporary traffic optimisation for this end of the motorway, with conflicting traffic streams from vehicles entering and exiting the motorway. As this will be the terminus for several years to come (with the rest of the section needing tunnels that are not even tendered yet...), they should really try to disentangle this - traffic jams forming at the end of the motorway are never fun and a safety concern (and they will occasionally form, especially around busy holiday periods..).

Other than that, I do have two more questions on Romanian motorways, well, mostly on the new sections of A1, because that's what I have driven on..

- Why is the left / median barrier so close to the edge of the lane? In most other places around the world that I have driven on, there is maybe up to half a meter more space (or even more, of course). In Romania, overtaking a truck sometimes already feels narrow... Is this really just a cost saving issue? Or bad/old design/safety standards?

- Similar, the acceleration / deceleration strips more or less just utilise the emergency strip, and are thus really narrow, and often feel short... Again, just costs? How much of the total costs can that amount too?

It was built between 1966-1969.

Lenght: 1.6 km
Width: 18.7 m
It is 2x2 and has also 2 tram lines. It is basically the biggest viaduct in Romania still, considering the new one next to Aciliu.

Further opennings expected this year:

Quote:
✔ A1 Lugoj - Deva, Lot: 3-21,1 km
✔ A1 Lugoj - Deva, Lotul 4: 10,2 km
✔ A3 Cluj Vest (Gilău) - Nădăşelu: 8,9 km
✔ A10 Sebeş - Turda, Lot 3: 12,5 km
✔ A10 Sebeş - Turda, Lot 4: 17 km
✔ A3 Bucureşti-Ploieşti: 6,5 km
Plus A3 mountainous crossing planned to be started from Brasov and possibly Comarnic (before Sibiu-Pitesti as I stated a few times here).

Man, there is no contract signed and you put those segment on openning expected this year? C'mon, use your eyes a little.

From those 6 segments, only 2 or 3 could be open to traffic this year:

90% probability -
A1 Lugoj - Deva, Lot: 3-21,1 km (still some problems and lot of work around Holdea I/C
A3 Bucureşti-Ploieşti: 6,5 km (still no building permits in Voluntari area)

0% probability:
A1 Lugoj - Deva, Lotul 4: 10,2 km - still no building permit for some segments, especially the Soimus area.
A3 Cluj Vest (Gilău) - Nădăşelu: 8,9 km - no contract for needed bridge at Gilau over Somes (without this bridge, those 8,9km cannot be used

50% probability:
A10 Sebeş - Turda, Lot 3: 12,5 km
A10 Sebeş - Turda, Lot 4: 17 km

@rudiwien: I think the problem comes from design/safety standards that were wrote in that way. They ask for really big guard rails, but other then that they don't really look at safety.

I find it very similar to some Italian motorways (ex. A22 Brennero). Was very claustrophobic at the beginning, got used to it after a while. But overtaking a truck in a curve in a tunnel still feels not so safe (especially at max speed limit)

I'm always surprised that trucks can take the entry and exit curves within the safety barriers, considering the required extra space the trailer of a truck needs.
There are more comments about poor safety measures, which have been discussed in the past. Just a pity there's a lack of competent people to push for better standards.

Yes, that is true, A22 also feels very narrow - but that is a very old motorway, built in the 60s & 70s, and in an area of rather limiting geography. We have the same with older motorways in Austria from that time... But newer motorways are normally built with different safety standards..

Well if you look at Romania, motorway building isn't really the norm, it's still a country at the beginning, unfortunately...

Is there any estimated opening date for the first 4.5km?
