Dude, have you even read the official approval? The project in Galati is paid from Connecting Europe Facility. Braila, we will see.

Well, it is approved by the EU Commission, so your opinion is irrelevant. Thank you. Move on and stop trolling the thread.

PS: I drove a few times on the road connection linking Drobeta to Arad, and the freight traffic is ridiculously low. Needless to say it is much lower than it is on the route from Galati through Braila and A2 connecting to Constanta (at times simply impossible to overpass because of Ukrainian , Moldovan and even Russian TIR columns). Not that it justifies a bridge at Braila, because it obviously does, but it shows how ridiculous is the whole discussion between a bridge that does not drive traffic to justify its costs (Calafat) and a bridge that should've been built a long time ago (Braila). Constanta does drive the freight traffic in the whole SE Europe region, and the bridge at Braila together with a motorway linking with Galati and further to Bucharest will adjust the infrastructure requirements there.

Nor, Le Clerk, don't go overboard here. Firstly, freight traffic on DN6 is by no means "low". not even on hollidays, sorry. It's not as bad as the backbone of the country, A1/DN7, but still, it's the next worst thing.

I'm not sure what to think about the huge "Moldovan, Ukrainian and Russian TIR columns", cause frankly, I don't drive eastwards, but you're naive to think the new Danube bridge will have ANY impact on this kind of traffic, since it comes from the NE, through Moldova, via Giurgiulesti. One might say that we can build at least a new ferry at Isaccea to help the Ukrainian trucks coming from Odessa and the southern cities, but unless the ukrainians build a new and expensive bridge over the lake the Dniester forms near the sea (or make a land swap to correct THIS stupidity), it will still be more logical for them to enter the country at Galati-Giurgiulesti crossing, transiting through Moldova. As for many other ukrainian and russian trucks, they most likely enter the country via Siret or Albita, as these are the logical routes to their large urban centers deep in the continent.

Let's be honest, the Braila bridge is a mostly local thing, meant to take the area out of isolation and atract new industries thank to better conectivity to the mainland and to the sea, also to allow the cities to expand on the other bank of the Danube. That's it!

There is a plan for a tunnel beneath the Danube at Galați which would compete with the bridge, but that has no EU funding and it will probably never be built.

I don't know whose fantasy that tunnel is, but it's to much. A 1+1 bridge would be enough, I think. If the traffic grows very much, you can build another one next to it.

Apparently, this will be the fifth longest suspension bridge in Europe, by main span length.

Great Belt Bridge, Denmark (main span 1,624 m)

Humber Bridge, England (main span 1,410 m)

Hardanger Bridge, Norway (main span 1.310 m)

Höga Kusten Bridge, Sweden (main span 1,210 m)

Not that impressive. The first bridge Romania built over Danube in 1895 was the longest in Europe at the time, and second in the world. Now we got lame.

BTW:

And the projected motorway/expressway network in the area, as approved by the masterplan:

Podul suspendat peste Dunăre este cuprins în Master Planul General de Transport al României şi face parte din categoria proiectelor de tip ITI (Investiţii Teritoriale Integrate), finanţabile din POIM 2014 - 2020, Axa Prioritară 2 "Dezvoltarea unui sistem de transport multimodal, de calitate, durabil şi eficient".

As I mentioned before, the bridge will be financed with EU money, probably at 85%, from the infrastructure programme allotted to the ITI project, which has in turn a 1 B EUR financing from the EU targeted for the regional development.

PS: there is at least EUR 600 million from the ITI programme left for the region, even with the bridge construction counted. There s lots of money for more infrastructure building there, in a region which has a huge economic potential.
