in my opinion if it comes to a pure road construction the most important thing is to have the right contract - and of course - a reliable partner (with a finance background)
if your requirements are well secured you should not expect any kind of dramatic damages (finance, social, costruction, etc).

so I am not surprised that one stretch of our motorway (Kraków - Katowice), which was constructed in 1990s needs to be rehabilitated or modernised. it was one of the first motorways (if not the first one) and I am sure we did not know everything about it that time. the most important thing is to go successfully throught process called "lesson learnt"

last thing: do not really relay on all Austrian companies. our national road agency cancelled a contract with Apline Bau GmbH (about 20 kms of motorway only !).
at the end let me tell something worse - if I remember right - one of new stretches of Polish motorway would be constructed by chinese company. I really look forward what would happen

Oh, I know. Even here there are some rumors in the media that some Chinese companies would be willing to build the future Bucharest ring road. And Poland is given as an example on how a partnership with China would develop the road infrastructure.

Orastie-Sibiu (82 km)

All the above sections will have to be completed by end of 2013.

Deva-Orastie tender was announced already for May 19.

The Sibiu-Pitesti section (the remaining section of Corridor iv) will be tendered next year and will have to be a PPP (approx. value of 3-4 billion EUR). Source

Update map:

Other sections may be contracted or U/C next year, but this is what we know so far from official sources.

Unfortunatelly the works on the overpasses from the Bucharest ring are advancing very, very slow. I visited them one week ago and the only real progress from the last year was made on the Otopeni overpass.

The Basarab overpass though is moving - they completed the bridge over Dambovita.

@ Skynick: I am sure that you are much better speaking english than I do Romanian

@ LeClerk: I understood that the A3 motorway from Turda to Campia Turzii should be finished at least at 28-02-2010. Maybe I am completely wrong?! What are the expactations of opening of this section? Because when that is finished than we can make a hugh progress in terms of time passing Campia Turzii and Turda, which is horrible during the day at this moment.

Many thanks in forward already for your info LeClerk!

Greetings,

Joejojo

As you can see from the photos, they will have to work a bit for the extra 10 km between Campia Turzii and Turda.

They said that they will finish by the end of the year (that means maybe in Sept-Nov, if not December). Nobody said EXACTLY when they will finish, everybody (Bechtel, Govnm. and the press) is agreeing they will finish in 2010.

That section is in green colour, which means it is U/C now. It will be completed by the end of this year.

Awesome pics. If the signage wasn't in Romanian, I would think those were taken somewhere in Austria.

Too bad there are only 42 km. When A3 will be finished, I will drive from Bucharest to Cluj just for kicks. Yeah, need to wait for another 6-7 years.
