I think this is a fair motorway situation in Romania:

Green - operational
  • A1 Bucuresti - Pitesti
  • A2 Bucuresti - Cernavoda
  • A3 Turda - Gilau
Yellow - u/c, to be opened late this year
  • A1 Sibiu bypass
  • A3 Turda - Campia Turzii
Red - u/c, to be opened in 2011 - 2012
  • A1 Arad bypass
  • A1 Arad - Timisoara
  • A2 Cernavoda - Constanta
  • A3 Bors - Surpaclu de Barcau
  • A3 Bucuresti - Ploiesti
  • A4 Constanta bypass
Light blue - Pan European IV corridor sections to be tendered late this year
  • A1 Arad - Nadlac
  • A1 Timisoara - Lugoj
  • A1 Lugoj - Deva
  • A1 Orastie - Sibiu
Dark blue - A1 Deva - Orastie motorway - status unknown: some say it's awarded to Strabag, some say it's not awarded yet; others say that it's at the contestations point (we will see later what is going on there)

Other projects:

Brown - A3 Transilvania Motorway awarded to Bechtel (works on this sections haven't started yet)

Gray - A3 Comarnic - Brasov motorway (PPP project that failed; to be re-tendered next year)

Violet - A1 Sibiu - Pitesti: it might get EU money next year; nothing sure yet

If I missed something please tell me and I will make the changes.
@ionut: done!

You can also add Sibiu-Pitesti on A1/Corridor IV as grey. There are some chances that we can secure EU funding next year for this. But nothing is sure...

@ Bogdy: Nice one!

Just one small adjustment: Pitesti by-pass goes north of the city. Otherwise it looks fine!

BTW: We should work more with such maps because otherwise foreign visitors don't understand what we are talking here.

PPP projects seems highly unreliable these days... The contractor cannot secure the funds necessary with the uncertain economic situation.

I know that Pitesti bypass goes north of the city, but the motorway was drawn south on this map before, so I just 'greened' it.

This is why Comarnic - Brasov PPP failed. The contractor coudn't get the funds necessary for the motorway.

That is correct! But we don't have a choice for the most difficult section of A3: Comarnic-Brasov, because we don't have the money for it. They will change the conditions in the tender documents in the next year's tender to allow for better financing conditions and hopefully we'll have a contract and see works started in 2012.

But I don't think you can compare monetary issues of Switzerland with Romania. In Romania the problem is there is simply no money, in Switzerland the case is that they don't want to provide enough money, while there is enough available, but is spend otherwise. (fancy rail tunnels of 30 - 60 km)
Maybe you're right and you can not compare monetary issues... On the other hand, you could also argue that building a motorway costs the same or is even cheaper in Romania than in Switzerland. To oversimplify, 1 km of motorway costs 5-7 million euros in RO, whereas it costs at least 10 times more in a country like CH,D,F or whatever. It may even cost 100 times more when heavy civil engineering works are required, as the Swiss need to build roads through very densely populated areas or topographically difficult terrain (hills, mountains, lakes and rivers).

I don't believe that Switzerland doesn't to provide enough money on purpose, the amount of money is limited as in any other country of the world. There too, a lot of projects were postponed over years or even cancelled for financial reasons.

It is true that Switzerland builds fancy railway tunnels, not just for fun, but because the country has to absorb a major part of European Nord-South traffic circulation by road or by train.

I just wanted to mention that building surface transport systems is not only a matter of money. It is also a question of public will. I'm quite sure we could bring together this money.

I've been several times in Switzerland and I've noticed a different philosophy there, far better in my opinion: promoting clean & fast railway transportation instead of polluting road transportation is something I think Romania should learn from Swiss.

I don't think so. The trend is increasing automobile ownership and usage, it would be a waste to turn scarce funding to a modality that is not used very much (public transport). Romania needs priorities right now, and those are clearly roads.

Only people living outside of reality think the answer of mobility in Romania is public transport.

Besides that, pollution from transportation is grossly overestimated.
