Hi, when were built all motorways? If google map don't exist, i don't know really net. Every map show 2x2 road only in Krung Thep area. Why i don't know. Most of asian countries (Pakistan, India, China, Saudi Arabia, SAE etc.) have motorways "only" from 2003-05. I don't believe it because European countries have less lenght of motorways 10-20 years ago.
It is very interesting that in spite of a lot of 2x2 roads Thailand is poorer that Eastern Europe with little 2x2.

Lenght, distance of roads must be built, appear in times, for example 1990 country has lenght sections less than 2005. Every edited map of Thailand (in 1990s, 2010s) have road only in Bangkok area. In East Asia have a lot of km of motorways /2x2 road only Japan, China.
I really don´t know as I write sense of sentences another manner.

First you have to know that in Thailand major roads are categorized in different types.

National Highways
Primary highway, part of the network connecting regions, provinces, districts, and other important destinations.
Spans 51,726 km across the country and the first Highway was built ca. 1960

Rural Highways
45,000 km

Motorways
High capacity highway designed for high speed traffic. Motorway entrances and exits have controlled access.

Motorways are still being extended. The first motorway opened in 1998. Current network is 145 km, but will be greatly extended to 4,154 km.

Blue lines are existing motorways, while red lines are new motorways that will be u/c at the end of this year.

National-, Rural- hwys, motorways with speed limit at least 100 km/h? Do you know 'when' were builded sections, e.g. Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima - Khon Kaen, *not building motorway in map? First National hwy (2x2) in 1960 is really very early! In 1967 rich France have completed Paris - Lille, Paris - Dijon, Lyon - Valence, total only 1500 km -- in 2013 11300 km. You describe some old road maps, table. I saw excellent 2x3 or 4 road lanes, wide and long bridges e.g. Chao Praya, Na Bang but nothing when roads have been created, eg. in United States Pontchatrain bridge open in 50s but in 70s have not 1 but 2 lanes in direction.
In every country 2x2+ road is called various name. I'm interest where it is.
Mark: 2x2 mean 4 lanes road or 2 lanes in each direction (common, Beograd - Zahreb), 2x3 mean 6 lanes road or 3 lanes in each directions (in high density pop. area, Berlin - Munich), and so on. 2x4 are mainly in ringroad, except network in Los Angeles, Soeul.

The speed limit in Thailand are:
Towns: 60 km/h
Intercity Highway: 90-100 km/h
Motorway & Expressway: 120 km/h

Major highways

Phahonyothin Road - Highway Route 1 (1,005 km)
Construction began in 1936 and the section was completed in 1940 and was later extended to Chiang Rai :
Bangkok - Lopburi (June 24, 1940)
Lopburi - Chiang Rai

Mittraphap Road - Highway Route 2 (612 km)
Construction began in 1955 and was divided into two sections :
Saraburi - Nakhon Ratchasima (July 14, 1958)
Nakhon Ratchasima - Nongkhai (January 27, 1965)

Sukhumvit Road - Highway Route 3 (387 km)
This highway was divided into sections and the section was open for service in 1936-1951 :
Bangkok - Samut Prakan (September 8, 1936)
Bangkok - Trat (1951)

Phetkasem Road - Highway Route 4 (1,274 km)
This highway is the longest :
Bangkok - Songkhla (Construction was completed in 1950)

However to be precise the first Highway in Thailand that used both asphalt and concrete was constructed in 1957 and was open for service in 1965. Mittraphap Road or Highway route 2 runs from Saraburi and all the way to Nongkhai, the length is about 612km. It was built with financial assistance from the United States.

Sometimes after this the other Highways then opt for asphalt and concrete and began widen the roads to four-lane and more.

This is a video of building a Highway in Thailand in 1966.

For Codename B
I think highways like Mittraphap Road in 1966, exactly. I interest in history road (2x2) in the past. First road (2x2) was built in Germany 1938 from Darmstadt to Frankfurt.
