As I remember this is highway close to new airport outside Bangkok, which is very (too) wide. A bit closer to Bangkok, when some other roads and highways join, you are stopped by standard traffic jams.

Interesting! Are people in Thailand contemplating driving to China on the new highways through Laos, maybe bring tents or caravan to sleep in? Or is that type of vacation seen as unacceptable in Thailand?

Bangkok - Chiang mai 696 km.(measure in the main route.)

Start from Bangkok city roads and expressways.

Toll ahead

Toll

Toll

Toll again

End point of 2nd stage expressway start of 3rd stage expressway (sub-urban area)

**This is not a main route, but I choose to go on this route because the traffic condition is lower than the main one.***

Exit sign for Bangkok Outer Ring (Highway No.9) [west side]
Everyone "must" exit because this is the end of this expressway.

Toll!!

On Hwy. No.9
Turn left for No.347 bound for Bang Pahan

***This is not a main route.***

Then,joint to Hwy. No.32(Asian highway network AH2)
I'm sure this is the main one.

Sing buri provience area. Interchange with Hwy. No.11
Another highway to Chiang mai, but I'll use it in Lampang-Chiang mai section.

Interchange with National Hwy. No.1
This is real main highway to the north, but in the central part of the country, this route is far so,Hwy. No.32 became the main route as a shortcut road in this area.(See the map for understanding how the roads go.)

Then,The Hwy. No.32 will be end and it will be National Hwy. No.1 (Asian highway network AH2)instead.

Nakhon Sawan city by-pass road (Hwy. No.122) - Keep left

On the by-pass road.

Then back to National Highway No.1 again - Turn left for north bound

Newly paved

Interchange with Highway NO.105 Bound for Maesot district of Tak provience.
This is also one of asian highway network (AH1 east-west corridor connects Myanmar,Thailand,Laos, and Vietnam)

Entering Muang district of Tak provience.
Muang district or its meaning main district of each provience. Sometimes we can call it as the city as name as the provience.

Interchange with Highway No.12 (Asian highway AH1)
Turn left for Muang district. (or the other name,Tak city)
Turn right for Sukkhothai

wet

dry...

Then, wet

And then, dry....

200 km. to go

Broken road
Reduce speed.... This is what the sign say.

On the mountain

Bridge work

The sigh says
Slippery road when it rains.

Entering muang district of Lampang provience.
Since Highway no.11 meet with highway no.32(AH2) in Sing Buri. Now it meets National Highway No.1(AH2) again....

Interchange with Highway No.11
Turn left for Chiang mai

On Hwy. No.11

Khuntan area, where the longest railway tunnel in South-east Asia located.

6% down hill

Lamphun provience

Then, welcome to Chiangmai

Exit to frontage road and turn left for Chiangmai city roads web.

Muang Lampang area

Are those traffic lights for all the lanes or just for the lane underneath them? In the latter case and given the cars disposition on the road, I can't imagine what I should do on this light signal...

right-turn traffic -- wait for signal
Straight traffic -- Go

I'm not sure all traffic lights in Japan shows like this or not.But typical traffic lights in Thailand shows red light in straight traffic and seperate green arrow for other direction traffic as same as in most other countries.
