Ah I had a feeling it wouldn't be a true Aeroflot aircraft. I guess they didn't bother changing the original livery except for the titles.

Click a-wing

Jigna Padhiar spots a new hobby in town

Call it amusement, habit or instinct, turning your head towards the sky to look at a flying airplane is something one never misses to do. But there are those who take this excitement to another level. Capturing the thrill of spotting the mechanical wings on their on camera. The handful of them who sport this hobby is rising, and getting noticed worldwide.

Ask any of them on how they discovered aviation photography, and they'll count their blessings of being near one of the busiest airports in the country.

Log on to any aviation photography websites, and don't be surprised to see pictures clicked around Sahar and Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus Airport by photographers in the city. Many of who have formed a group, whereas there are others who pursue this hobby individually, giving them a dream like freedom and a birdlike joy.

What began as a hobby is now getting noticed, and has Mumbai representing India on international websites. "I discovered aviation photography websites, and started putting up my pictures there. We are now a group of people, who go out clicking pictures and put it on many such sites," says Ketan Mahadeshwar.

"Aviation photography is almost an unheard concept in India. We get two responses from people who see us clicking pictures around the airport. Either they laugh it out, thinking it to be kiddish, or they feel that there could be some threat," says Vivek Manvi whose photos can be spotted on www.airliners.net

Photography around the airport being banned, there was a breeze of relief in the year 2004 with the removal on the ban. For some, the reason for getting into aviation photography was the ban itself. "Similar to the way children do exactly what you don't want them to do; for me it was the sheer joy of sneaking in and clicking pictures since it was restricted," says Mahadeshwar. As for another Vishal Jolapara, his dream of taking his grandparents in a plane got him to click pictures to keep those special memories forever in ways of photos. "People who stay around the airport and of course, the hotels are a big help for my kind of photography," adds Jolapara.

Photographing an object moving in the air is not an easy task. Look up at the sky with the sun shining bright, it's a feat to keep your eyes open without flinching and waiting for your objet of desire to make its appearance. Daunting challenges - technical, surrounding and creative, for most of them the challenge of clicking a moving object is what urges them to click.

Manvi tells about his creative challenge. "I am fascinated by the colour schemes of different aircrafts, their symbols and logos. There are certain colour schemes and designs that aircrafts follow, and that is interesting to capture," says Manvi. Other than that, the traditional motifs on different international flights that land in Mumbai interests most of these photographers.

With spirits as high as the airplanes, aviation photographers are hoping to do more interesting work, and put Mumbai on the global map of aviation photography.

I honestly do not recall ever saying, "the hotels are a big help for my kind of photography". Wonder where Jigna got that from ????????
Anyways, the locals deserve all the credit for being ever so kind & gracious in hosting us there.

Sorry about the quality as, as soon as i tried to click the airplane it would just give a washed-out picture due to the morning sun falling flat on the fuselage.
VT-AID was leased by AI from Korean Airlines (KE) on 17th December 2003 & returned back to the lessor on 22nd December 2006 when it was converted to a freighter & now operates as HL7608
