No financial funds are available for that, so the answer is no.

Well, I guess if they could find the funds to re-build the Stadtschloss, they'll eventually find the funds to rebuild the roof of the Dom to its original splendour.

What's new in Berlin development? Last time I was there was two years ago (Sept. 2006). I'm going to go back in 2009. I figure I'll have to see the US embassy and O2 World. Can I take the U55 U Bahn to Pariser Platz yet? I was hoping to be able to see the Great Berlin Wheel, but alas they haven't even started it.

I really wonder, why the Berlin Projects & Construction-thread is so dead compared to others threads here. Although Berlin is one of the fastest changing cities in Europe.
So I'm going (to try) to reply to your question Darryl.

When will you be back in 2009? If it is not too early in the year, there will be some projects finished, almost finished or at the beginning of construction.
I don't know about U55 though. In Berlin everything seems to take twice or three times as long...

finished construction:

The Neues Museum (New Museum) by David Chipperfield will be completed or near completion. With this, and other works of restauration/reconstruction, the Museumsinsel will be finally restored to it's former beauty.
http://www.museumsinsel-berlin.de/
(the modern James Simon Gallery by Chipperfield has yet to start construction though)

The former Palast der Republik on Schlossplatz will be completely gone. You can look at a temporary art exhibition in a pretty hideous temporary building.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/photo64...83353/sizes/o/

The Schinkelplatz is already finished. It's a beautiful reconstruction of an old city square and is right next to Schlossplatz and Unter den Linden.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/photo64...36530/sizes/o/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/berolino/2962388280/

The "Upper Eastside" building complex along Unter den Linden is now almost finished.
http://www.uppereastsideberlin.de/

The new spectacular reading room of the old Staatsbibliothek (State Library) on Unter den Linden might/should be finished then.
http://www.morgenpost.de/multimedia/...8_jpg_585b.jpg

The new embassy of the United States is already finished, as you said.
With this, Pariser Platz is finally finished too.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/frankin...51622/sizes/l/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sascha_...95696/sizes/l/

Almost all of the Townhouses near Unter den Linden will be finished as well.
http://www.welt.de/multimedia/archiv...es_430080g.jpg
http://www.flickr.com/photos/2829243...19553/sizes/o/

This new library (Jakob und Wilhelm Grimm Zentrum) near Unter den Linden will be probably finished too. At least the outside. It will have a spectacular interior.
http://www.maxdudler.de/de/projekte/...immzentrum.php

O2 Arena is finished, as you said:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cbmd/2939136290/sizes/l/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/anberli...07115/sizes/l/

They'll finish this (quite ugly thing) on Alexanderplatz soon:
http://www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.d...te_250x182.jpg
http://www.morgenpost.de/multimedia/...at_150633b.jpg

Maybe not that interesting, but I love old museums.
The Naturkunde Museum (Museum of Natural History) was partly renovated and now you can visit the largest dinosaur skeleton of the world again.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/1025480...75293/sizes/o/

beginning construction:

Good news fo the Great Wheel. Construction should start in the middle of November, this year!!!
http://www.morgenpost.de/berlin/arti...Riesenrad.html
<---in German

The Spreedreieck near Bahnhof Friedrichsstraße is in the middle of construction:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/agentfl...24179/sizes/l/

Construction of Hackesches Quartier near Hackescher Markt has started:
http://www.ivg.de/images/Berlin_HQ_P...earbeitet2.jpg
http://www.ivg-europe.com/images/Hac...e_Mitte_kl.jpg

They started construction for the Zoo Fenster a skyscraper (ca. 120m) near Kurfürstendamm. No new rendered pictures for this project though.

I think, this were all the most important constructions within Berlins city centre.
Or did I forget something?

Wow Tiaren! Thanks so much. That was a great response!

I agree that there seems to be no interest in Berlin here on SSC. I guess cuz there's no skyscrapers in Berlin? To me, skyscrapers do not a city make. Oh well.

I know! How many YEARS does it take to build ONE subway station?? I'm talking about just the station, not the tunnel. The tunnel was completed some time ago. What on earth is taking so long to complete that station at Pariser Platz??

The most exciting project of all IMO is the Museum Island project, but then again it appears they've been working on it for 10 years! and it won't be complete till 2015?! Jeez.

I really appreciate your efforts. Thank you!

Hab' ich doch gern gemacht, Darryl. <---means something like: It was my pleasure, Darryl.

You might find this interesting. I just stumbled over a construction video of U-55:

And it's in English!

Thanks Tiaren, yeah I've actually seen that before. It's a pretty cool video. I just hope they finish that (I think its actually called Brandenburger Tor U55 station rather than Pariser Platz) soon. It would be nice for Pariser Platz/Unter den Linden to FINALLY look "complete" without scaffolding and construction.

Don't worry mate, if it makes you feel any better, one station ABOVE GROUND in Auckland started construction in 2007 and won't be complete until 2010-2011!

It's supposed too. The architect is actually Gehry, you wouldn't know it though. They didn't want any flash because it would then outshine the Brandenburg Gate.

Not flashy but something nice would have been appreciated.
