Two many low-rises here. Several of this projects could/should have 8-12 instead of 4-6 floors.

They generally follow the "Berlin height" (Traufhöhe) of 22m.
It's part of the magic that makes the city so liveable, human-scale and cosy. And they still let some sunlight reach the street.

In a 4-6 floors building, there still is something like a good neighbourship. People know each other.
The localities of Berlin are widely known as "Kieze", compact urban districts, that feel like distinct towns where many people know each other, feel home and have everything at their reach. It's what's generally considered the true identity of Berlin.

That's one of the reasons I want to see higher buildings only at some specific locations, to create clusters instead of sprinkling the whole city with them.

Upper part of the aerial view: true Berlin.
Lower part: Modernist nirvana.

And guess what? The highrise districts in the lower part have a considerably lower population density and much less vibrancy than the "lowrise", tightly built 19th century quarters above.

Your picture is pretty old erbse (2009). A lot of things changed over the last years near the Alexanderplatz ... the density increased a bit due to new builds and a lot of things are going to be build new in the next years, so the density will increase more.

I drew some things into this picture to show new constructions since 2009, buildings that are under constructions right now and buildings that probably are going to be build within the next years. There are probably some buildings i forgot about ...

Green - build since 2009
Blue - under construction right now
Red - Start of construction within the next years
Yellow - renovated

You're right, of course. Still, the area just south of the Alexanderplatz feels detached, isolated and suburban. This won't change until heavy densification took place, necessarily involving some demolitions of commieblocks and similar structures.

I think I've seen some kind of plan to densify the area around Alexanderplatz, whatever happened to those plans? Still, wouldn't it be ideal to have a cluster of high-rises around the Fernsehturm?

Erbse,

Architecture can not have a soul. This word is the expression of ideology. Architecture corresponds to the taste of an individual or it does not.

Humans are individual, so the best what we could prefer is a free market with the defense of the property rights. People have different values and tastes. Everyone has the right to like what he like or not. One taste for the whole city is not compatible with free people. People should have the right to build what he wants to build on their property. No matter which architecture or height.

Your words are a little bit problematic I think. I understand, you like some architecture more than another but other people have also the right to say, they like an architecture which you don´t like.

A free city has different architecture because the taste of people is subjective.

So, here you can read if you want . https://mises.org/library/education-...ry-1/html/c/13

sure. cheap and tacky McMansions, investment glass boxes and commieblock "living machines". Sounds like nirvana, doesn't it? Because that's what the libertarian/ anarchist way of cityplanning will get us. Our cities belong to all of us, the least we can do is to at least preserve the nice parts completely or at least in character without allowing people with no idea about architecture or investors wanting to make a quick buck to ruin our cityscapes. If you want them to be able to build their horrible architectural wastelands, let them do that where nobody has to see it, instead of next to Alexanderplatz.
