Surely, Berlin's charme is pretty much a result of the fact that it has indeed a lot of places and areas where you are able to ... take a breath, recover a bit from the live in a metropolis.
But... What I can't stand are some of the failed urban plannings undertaken in the 60s and 70s, e.g. the Grunerstraße - whole district had to give way for a simple main street? - or south of Breitscheidtplatz - misplaced tunnel for crosswalk. For me, parts of Alexanderplatz belong to this category. For instance, the 10 meter broad walkway in the north east; who is supposed to feel comfortable while passing it by? A city is not only designed for architectural photography or communist urban planning supporters: The majority of inhabitants has to be able to feel good living in it. I can only applaude when they have finished the reconstruction and revision of these areas; luckily, they are already working on it. And, still, after having finished those works there are still plenty of areas, parks etc. where you can do exactly what I was writing about in the beginning - even more than in most of the major cities of the world. |

wow, I'm fairly amazed at what is going to be built in Berlin. It might not be as much as in other cities but at least it's really good stuff! Especially "3 Leipziger" and that project at Kollwizplatz are really nice, unlike the majority of modern buildings. This is what modern architecture should be like!
The townhouses are pretty nice, too. Good onion, Berlin!! Poor but sexy! Last edited by kyler; November 3rd, 2007 at 04:04 PM. |

There's a huge leisure center in the pipeline for Berlin. It's probably going to be called Polaris, due to the indoor ski slope it'll house.
The highest spot will be about 70metres, it'll be 305m long and 65m wide. ![]() Underneath the ski dome there will be a water park (with an area of about 16'500m²). If the weather's nice (what's a rather seldom case in Berlin ) the glass roof can be reversed.![]() The Central Plaza will offer some gastronomy and entertainment. It'll sprawl over an area of nearly 27'000m². ![]() According to the investors there will emerge 800 jobs out of this project. This 152-million-€uro investment is about to begin. It's expected to welcome approximately 1.46 million visitors a year in Polaris. Time for a vacation eh

Maybe this also warrants a trip to our capital, for shopping or stuff like that anyway.
'City mansions' ('Stadtvillen' in German, is there any correct English term for this?) at the Falkoniergasse behind the anglo-neogothic Friedrichswerdersche Kirche (=church) by the Berlin architect Schinkel. You find an interesting (German) homepage of this project, if u click this link. It offers some renders and sparse informations 'bout this classic project. Size of the property: 2634 m² (sqm) Rentable area: 7600 m² Potential date of move-in: 1st quarter of 2010 A couple of drawings: ![]() Rendering from the northwest: ![]() A white mansion: ![]() Shopping arcades at the Falkoniergasse (day- and nightview, obviously): ![]() ![]() Another (newly built) white mansion this project includes: ![]() I really like that style. Such buildings should be a prototype of Germany's future urban development, besides great (and I mean great, not plain modernistic) modern architecture. Just gotta love classical buildings like that, they add a lot of aesthetics and urbanism to the cityscape

They could have made the outside of Polaris a bit nicer. Looks like the one in the Ruhr area. But I like that the have a modern snow/ice theme rather than the traditional alpine/beergarden one typical for other ski halls.

erbsenzaehler, I think the term you're looking for is 'mansionette' -possibly. I'm not too sure either. Maybe we don't have a literal translation for 'city mansion' in English. But from looking at the pictures, I'd probably just use the term 'terrace'.

![]() Not really convinced whether thats the right sort of building for that location. It would probably look better somewhere around the zoo. I think they should have opted for a more conservative design (stone facade) at the Friedrichstrasse. |
