Just the cathedral... It's only about rough dimensions.

Don't be silly. XD That's the Cathedral and one of the corners of the Bauakademie in front of it. How can you not see or know this?

funny, of course I know, I am not talking about the Bauakademie.

I mean the building directly in front of the cupola, the catedral doesnt look like that and the new citycastle also not...

@Suburbanist, you want highrises in the historical center of the city or what?

He probably wants the old GDR Foreign Ministry back. Vertically.

There is no building in front of the Cathedral. The "building" you refer to, is the main portal of the Cathedral, just without the statues. It's a simplified render of the building. And the other structure in front of the Cathedral is, as you said, a corner of the Bauakademie.

I like it that this area is finally rebuilt and that the design suits in the urban structure. The height and the width of the designs look good. Also I like that these are different buildings and not one big block.

I would have preferred a more historical design though. This is one of the oldest parts of Berlin, near the rebuilt Stadtschloss and historical buildings that have survived war and communism.

Unfortunately Alt-Berlin and Alt-Cölln are not going to be rebuilt anytime soon, or at all. So this might be the only place where historical reconstruction or partly reconstruction would be possible.

Are there any other historical buildings planned to be rebuilt in the upcoming years?

So far the tower of Parochial Church:

Reconstruction starts this summer.

Then Bauakademie:

Recontruction is supposed to start before the City Palace is going to be finished or at about the same time.

And then of course the City Palace, Berlin's biggest reconstruction effort ever:

Reconstruction already started and will be externally finished by 2016.

Most other reconstruction efforts are going to be made in nearby Potsdam.

Museum Barberini:

Reconstruction already started here.

Garnison Church:

At least the tower will be reconstructed in the next years.

Ludi, how about you tell us something about this visualisation? Is it recent, will this be the final design? I kinda doubt it...

The true is..., I don't know, just found it at Langhofs actualised homepage without any informations.

There are plans for new buildings in this area, but the old GDR buildings still occupied.

That's what I thought. But why do post some random visualization in here? I think, this thread is supposed to inform of concrete/definite projects in Berlin?

They will build something new there and we know allready different ideas of different architects, lets see what people think about it.

Its not 100% concrete, but I think 98% concrete that they will build soon some new stuff around the Wilhelmstrasse.

There is also an older draft by Patzschke for the same area:

Monarch Group wants to build the next Tower

September they want to make a building application to the city goverment, next year they gonna start if if everything goes well.

The draft / architect isnt sure for now, some sources say, MonArch only wants some little changes at the old Ortner + Ortner draft and other sources say, that MonArch wants to start a ne competition.

That was the old Ortner draft, I liked very much.

Berlin's been doing fantastic job since the unification. It's a shame I haven't had the chance to visit since the early 90s. I'm wondering, how is the job market in the German capital? I can see the city is booming, so there must be something else than architecture that attracts that many people to move there.

Most jobs are in the public sector. In the private sector there are still very few jobs. Many people move there without having a job, many of them are artists as well.
