Having half of the buildings painted in all shades of rainbow here in Poland, I'd gladly take all this boring architecture and color palette.

New residential buildings are mostly white and boxy too and I see nothing wrong with it btw. When architects try to be "creative" it usually ends with something that is neither nice looking nor functional.

But rainbows in Poland got exactly the shades you're looking for!

Haha there is no way this image could be any further from the truth - half of the commieblocks are painted in oranges, pinks, greens and such. Even new developments get some crazy colors. As for the rainbow, we got a pretty one in Warsaw. It was burned once, dunno what's going on with it now

A bunch of white boxes, but they are of such high quality and each with a completely unique fenestration pattern.

All that matters is the quality of the materials. High quality cladding makes basically everything look good.

I actually prefer those classy looking buildings instead of rainbow-colored facades. It is true, many of the recent projects in Berlin have a lot in common, but I appreciate this because it is a stylistic continuation and modern interpretation of the 'golden age' from 1890-1910 which still defines Berlin.

We should extend that "Golden Age" well into 1929 (and start with the Hobrecht-Plan of 1862 and the rapid development after that), since many of the Berlin Style buildings actually resemble early modern architecture or even expressionism of the 1920s. And the "Roaring Twenties" (Goldene Zwanziger) of Berlin are justly legendary, see 1920s Berlin. So, imho the definition of Berlin's first true "Golden Age" would be 1862-1929 (with limitations for 1914-18 and until '23 with the inflation).

Reminder: We have an own dedicated thread for Berlin Style buildings at the city's forum.

ICC Berlin - International Congress Center - renovation

Berlins new mayoral Mueller wants to renovate the ICC. Demolishing would cost more than 200Mio € and another building for congresses more then 80Mio €.
Renovationworks will cost more than demolishing and new building, some people want to demolish this masterpiece.

ICC Berlin opened in 1979 (three years after the opening of the Palace of the Republic), and its architects were Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte. It is 320 metres long, 80 metres wide and 40 metres high. It is linked to the neighboring Messe Berlin fairgrounds; often joining in trade shows and exhibitions.

As perhaps Europe's biggest such centre, it is instrumental to Berlin being one of the top congress cities in the world. It is serviced by S-Bahn station Berlin Messe Nord/ICC. By its own reckoning, ICC Berlin is a landmark of post-war German architecture and has served as an inspiration for similar facilities around the globe.

The current ICC is contaminated by asbestos.[1] Its removal will cost much more than the originally planned 259 million Euro.[2]

The Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin (ICC Berlin), located in the Westend locality of the Berlin borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, is one of the largest conference centres in the world. It is used for conventions, theatrical productions, and concerts.

I hope the floor tiles and carpets are replaced or at least their colors tuned down a little bit. The current colors really make my eyes hurt.

That is typical 70s style, loud patterns on carpets were part of the architecture of the time

ICC's interiors are among the most iconic of their time. They should preserve as much as possible when it comes to looks. Of course technical and energetic renovations can't be avoided any longer. And they need to get rid of loads of asbestos.

This will put the ICC at a disadvantage. Business Convention Centers need always to be up-to-date to keep attracting A-level events.

They should build a second convention center in Berlin, on the grounds of Texel Airport (and extend U5 there).

Truly a masterpiece among buildings. Never seen anything even close like that. It makes me feel like the future. Please, preserve it as it is as much as possible.
