It's the 12th now, so it should be. The Dutch tv text service and a very good news site www.nu.nl haven't yet mentioned it though

I can see W.Europe suffering from financial crisis. "Christmass gift" or "come spend here"

On the news here they're talking the 'barriers' being lifted.

I hope it stays this way and that it doesn't revert back next year...

Sure, why would it change?

If they vote no to allowing Romanians and Bulgarians free movement, the borders come back up. The EU won't let them be part of Schengen then.

But there are still border controls, because CH is not part of the single European market.

No.
Schengen means, that the customs officer aren't asking for your passport anymore, but they continue to ask, if you have dutiable goods with you.

In that case it doesn't really make sense to me anymore. The same way on the airport. Tickets are sold by name, so you have to show your id that the ticket belongs to you, even when you fly in the Schengen area.

Yeah, but they won't go investigating, if you're some kind of a criminal at airports. It's the same on the Norwegian border.

I wonder how often people cross land borders within schengen without at least a national ID card. I assume that in really well integrated regions people just don't care and don't bother with it? I know that within Scandinavia it's perfectly fine to just have a regular ID like a driver's license, if you're a Scandinavian citizen. It would be enough.

On a similar note I wonder just how many travel with a national ID card instead of passport when flying between Schengen countries. When I last went to Portugal I noticed quite a few Portuguese traveling with their national ID cards, but whenever I've flown from Sweden I don't think I've ever seen a single Swede use a national ID card instead of their passport.

I want to use my drivers licence as an ID, but it needs to be an ID card of Passport. Since I only have the latter, I usually carry my passport with me when I'm travelling abroad.

When I go abroad, I always have my ID card or my passport with me. It's even obligatory to have it with you within the Netherlands, but I don't always have that.

No, you don't. But you'll have to show your ID to the police when you are suspected of a crime (the police are *NOT* allowed to ask for your ID without any reason).

If you can't show your ID you will be arrested and held at the polciestation until your ID is known and you will get a fine of 60 Euros.

So, You don't have to carry it with you, but it is better to do so

Is just a drivers license acceptable within benelux, like within Scandinavia? Both regions seem to be really integrated and have Schengen-like agreements dating far earlier than Schengen itself.

I don't even know where my passport is, within EU all you need is a national ID card, even when you fly to the UK or other non schengen areas

Yep, I only use my ID card when travelling in the EU + Croatia, but I always have my passport with me in case I decide to go through Serbia.

Last time I needed passport was five years ago. I only travel with ID, in Slovenia driver's license suffices.

the drivers license in Slovenia is a personal ID card that is usable in the entire Schengen area as well? That would be cool.

It would be nice if you drivers license would count as an ID in the Schengen area, but AFAIK that's not yet so. When I went from Austria to Germany in February (by train) there was a guy in my compartment that only had his drivers license with him. The custom officers didn't like that and was going to get fined, but he talked himself out of it
