This one p's me off. How the banking industry in this town was taken apart and shipped out in cardboard boxes to other cities. Having to beg to Charlotte to retain jobs is rather embarrassing to say the least. It reminds me of Daley begging to get Frango mints made in the city again, after MField was bought out, only to be said they would look into the issue and get nothing but a kick in the ass instead. |

The days where a global city must be the headquarters of everything are passed. We live in a globalizing economy, and it is more important that a city be an important part of a network of global cities, playing a role in keeping the world's economy running. So while Chicago doesn't have many significant banking headquarters, by virtue of its size and importance as a metropolitan area it is still a place where an enormous amount of banking activity takes place. With headquarters dispersed everywhere, including Bensonville, Arkansas, I think it's safe to say that we need to look more closely at other factors than simply headquarters location when we evaluate the economic importance of cities. What I've said has certainly been argued over and over on these forums before, so it's certainly not novel (and there are a lot of people who know much more about this than I do). But I figured it would be important to emphasize this point in response to your post, Bnk. Not that the loss of LaSalle isn't a loss, but it's important not to take an isolated look at just this in particular. A few days ago I posted a Crains article about a local middle-market banking executive who has plans to recruit from LaSalle (after the merger) and form a new lending institution. In a huge, multitiered, diverse economic animal such as the Chicago metro economy (a larger economy than most nations, lets not forget), I'm guessing that a niche left vacant won't take long to get filled. If any of our economically-savvy forumers (and given the lack of response to previous calls for such commentary, I'm beginning to think that SSC simply does not have any) have any thoughts about this, I'd be thrilled to hear your input.

It reminds me of the collaboration that Boeing is doing with Japan in constructing the 787 composite dreamliner. If one could get a country to take a personal stake in the venture than one would expect to have a larger share from private and perhaps most importantly, esp. with China, National government and the contracts that could be consummated by these actions. These potential benifits could literaly last for generations so I hope allot of research and long term consequenses are thought out and not just a bump of the stock for the next quarter and such not. Caterpillar really is a large export manufacturing company that the USA have less and less of these days, along with Boeing. We really need to support and foster R&D and expansion of these said companies for the general interest in our country's future economy and security. BTW great job TUP for summarizing all of the important economic stories happening around town.
