For a good one your looking at £1000 per foot. So a 60 footer is gonnna cost you about £60,000.

But you can get some lower end ones for about £25,000 for about 40ft.

A Brand new 70 footer I saw outside reading, being built, was £90,000.

a standard long canal houseboat was going for £33'000 2nd hand

that excludes mooring costs (£1000 a year?)

This is also my favourite project in London. This area will be amazing in a few years time I use to live in Pentonville Road an loved walking into Kings Cross to take the train back to the Midlands.

My query is though could it mean a new lease of life for York Street underground station? I'm not sure how the development extends - would it be feasible?

I guess as they're investing so heavily in Kings Cross it would be unlikely.

Just a thought.

At www.210Pentonville.com there are details of the next door neighbour to the Nido 200 Pentonville student resi. just up the Pentonville Road fromKX. Sorry I don't have the capacity to post the pictures myself, but the final building looks like it could be OK. Nice top storey with some good views.
Worth a look if you haven't seen it. The existing block is covered with the white sheets of death - looks like the partial demo is underway.

It was already covered up with sheeting the last time I was there, but I'm sure it was nothing special, a bland post-war concrete framed office block you wouldn't look twice at.

Spot on:

Good riddance, the reclad looks surprisingly interesting for a student block, the finish needs to a lot better than the neighbouring student block, call me a cynic but I'm not too hopefull.

yay a thread where we can talk about canal boats without being particularly off-topic

there are tons of ways to get a cheap canal boat, or a barge. only people with a lot of money like to buy fully-fitted and complete canal boats. most people i know have done a lot of the fitting out themselves or had tradesmen do it afterwards. a mate of mine bought a barge in holland and had it sailed over (to cambridge) for a mere 8 grand. i'm sure he could sell it for 100 grand once his rayburn and his cherry wood kitchen fittings are installed.

edit: yes marina charges can be a bitch

its being redeveloped as offices not as a student block, the people that did next door are busy building the tower on middlesex street in the city

Thanks for the pictures London Lad and GazKinz - this is a real improvement. There is another pitch further up Pentonville (about half way) where clearly something is going to go up - no major demolition, but the space is about the same as for 210PEntonville. Its about time: most of the Pentonville / City Road thoroughfare is a complete disaster area, all the way from from KX to Old Street.

Here's an image of Foster's original masterplan for the Goods Yard site showing the large park and twin towers (top) he had proposed.

dam that would have been good. Hilarious reasoning for removing the towers though, not enough transport capacity apparantly. Ha

yeah, very nice.

That long, curving boulevard would have been great.

Yeah. Another problem was Foster's demolition of the hotel between St Pancras and Kings Cross. You can see his triangular station proposal sitting in the middle of the two stations. Interestingly SOM had proposed a similar design in their earlier designs for the area. Look how Po-Mo the buildings behind look!

You may scoff but some of the buildings in the background will not look to different to the ones actually getting built there. As I understand it Porphyrios associates http://www.porphyrios.co.uk are designing neo classical buildings just at the entrance to this new development. I actually think this is fine, there is enough space to show are range of architecture.

I'd like to see a mix of architectural styles in the area too rather than a single uniform look. It what London is all about really.

Heres some pics from that polyphorios site, all seems very nice-

I actually like Porphyrios's work, he's one of the best classical architects around, able to come up with original modern solutions to making the style contemporary. I think he'll fit in very well here.
