VIENNA - 11th District (Simmering)

Quote:
This is my newest picture project.
Lots of people know the sights in Vienna's Inner City yet don't know that there are actually 23 districts in my city.
I am going to portray each and every one of the districts in this series to make you familiar with the Real World Vienna.
SIMMERING - 11th District

Area: 23.23 km²
Pop.: 83,000

Normally seen as a classical working class district, Simmering is also responsible for a rather large percentage of Vienna's agricultural and industrial area.

The Gasometers, Vienna's finest in contemporary architecture. (There are some issues that shoul be fixed, but well.)

Old Commieblocks round here.

They can look pretty eerie, too:

Simmeringer Hauptstraße, the arterial road of the district:

Nice mix of subtle colours:

The church on Enkplatz as seen from Simmeringer Markt. Hi Maggie!

Bad quality, sorry... Crossing Simmeringer Hauptstraße again:

The house where my father spent a large part of his youth, Krausegasse 10:

Kraftwerk Simmering, Vienna's most important power plant:

I say: "More Commieblocks!"

"Yes! More Commieblocks!"

[frantically]"Yes!"[/frantically]

Aren't they gorgeous?

Kaiserebersdorfer Straße:

Something different now, Schloss Neugebäude:

Incredible, how fast the scenery changes:

This semi-rural plain area is known as "Simmeringer Haide":

Kaiserebersdorf, one of the three former villages and suburbs that form the district:

Mmh... beautiful.

Even these remote and sparsely (is that the correct word) populated areas are well connected. In about thirty minutes, line 71 takes you from Kaiserebersdorf to Schwarzenbergplatz in the center and it takes about ten minutes to get to the metro.

The central yard and workshop of Wiener Linien, Vienna's public transport company. Unfortunately, you don't get any closer.

A first in my series. The buildings in the background are not in Vienna, but in the neighbouring town of Schwechat (Lower Austria), known for Vienna's airport and terrible beer.

The main entrance to Zentralfriedhof, Europe's second biggest cemetary. "Half the size of Zurich, but twice as funny.", as we say.

Japanese touristsworshipping Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven:

The graves of all Federal Presidents since 1945 (at least the ones who are dead.)

A 20s commieblock. At that time the Socialists were still Socialists that deserved that name. And they employed better architects.

Along the railway line. Favoriten on the other side:

A nice residential mid-rise right next to the metro station:

Well, now that we are halfway through,... let me give you some basic information, some statistical nonsense:

Pictures taken: 1,677
Pictures published: 532
Time spent in the streets: 30h 34min

Great Pics, but why without one Picture of all 4 Gasometer in a row, the main part of Simmerings "skyline"? (maybe except the power plant)

Amazing Thread! I always want to know the cities' ''normal'' neighborhoods.
The buildings have great colors,too.

Btw. I follow the districts photo reports from Vienna since quite a while. Really, really great! Compliments from half-so-funny Zurich!

May I clarify that that quote does not (necessarily) reflect my views.

Well, dont take it too serious. Vienna itself has the reputation of being a sleeping pill... at least it had until lately.
The truth is quite something else I would say from my own experience... but reputations are long lived.

I would say, damn prejudices

But see it that way, its not like Zurich is no fun. See it the other way round...
Or which other cementary has its own birthday song, that around a hundred thousand people (of the living ones ) would join singing to?

Good pics heheh. One may find weird that big cities have agricultural districts, but here in Brazil the city with most farmers is Sao Paulo!

Having lived in both Sweden and Austria, I strongly disagree with you with the exception of some commie blocks

Maybe he refers to the, lets say, "special" (morbide) humour the people of Vienna are said to have?

Nevertheless, very interesting tours of Vienna. I wanted to go down the Danube to visit it, but unfortunately never found the time.
