Work on Penang Sentral to start soon

GEORGE TOWN: Work on the first phase of Penang Sentral in Butterworth is expected to start before the end of the year when the relocation of hawkers at the current site is completed.

Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) director Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar said the relocation would be carried out soon.

He added that the temporary terminal could accommodate up to 62 hawkers, compared to 50 at the Penang Port Commission's three-storey bus complex destroyed in a 2001 fire.

"We have handed over the temporary hawker centre to the local council, and the relocation process is up to them," he said after handing over school supplies to 300 underprivileged pupils under MRCB's "Pintar" project.

Ahmad, however, said the relocation was only expected to begin after all the stage and express bus operators had moved to the temporary terminal next month.

The temporary terminal was completed in July but to date, only RapidPenang has begun operating there.

Ahmad said work on the first phase, expected to cost RM300 million, should be completed by 2013, comprising bus and taxi terminals, and retail outlets.

The 12.8ha Penang Sentral project is jointly undertaken by Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputera Berhad (PHBB) and MRCB.

The integrated terminal for rail, road and sea travel is one of many major projects aimed at strengthening Penang's role as a logistics and transportation hub for the Northern Corridor Economic Region.

Projek Penang Sentral mula akhir tahun ini

Oleh NURUL HUDA HASSAN

PULAU PINANG 30 Okt.

MRCB to start work on Penang Sentral by year-end

Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

PENANG: Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) is expected to begin work on the first phase of the integrated transportation hub at the Penang Sentral in Butterworth by the end of the year, and as soon as efforts to relocate hawkers to a new site are completed.

Its director, Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar, said at present, more than 50 hawkers conducting business in the vicinity of the express bus station, near the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal, had to be relocated to enable the work to begin.

He said a new hawker’s complex with more than 60 stalls had been completed and would be handed over to the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP).

The stalls will be allocated to those hawkers who previously traded at the bus terminal complex which was razed by fire a few years ago.

“We will begin work on the hub as soon as the MPSP finishes allocating the stalls to the hawkers concerned. If the MPSP concludes this task quickly, we will expedite the work planned and the first phase is expected to be completed in 2013,” he told reporters after presenting the MRCB Student’s Leadership Excellence Award 2008 here yesterday.

Ahmad, who is also the managing director of Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), admitted that work on the project had been delayed due to the problem of relocating the hawkers who did not want to be far from the present bus station, as well as delays in taking over some parcels of land.

Apart from relocating the hawkers, he said that the present express bus operations would also be moved to the temporary bus terminal currently used by RapidPenang, by the middle of next month, to enable work to commence.

The Penang Sentral is a component of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), with an estimated gross development value in excess of RM2 billion, and it covers a land area of 557,418 sq metres (six million square feet).

The Penang Sentral project has four phases which integrate all land and sea services — the ferry, bus, taxi and rail. It is a joint venture between MRCB and Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputera Bhd. — Bernama

another tipu rakyat and balas dendam delayed project.

Used ferry last week. Peek into the site next to taxi stand.

NONE in sight. Rumput sudah mula tumbuh sana sini. NO SIGN WHATSOEVER WHEN WILL THEY START THE PROJECT.

Very clever thinking of outgoing PM. Even though his own state fell into opposition hand what he did was like shooting his own foot. He's going to resign next year and yet people of penang dont get what they really needed. I believe the project has obtained all necessary approval just lack of political will of government's bodek company. MRCB.

I actually fear for the worst...

Ipoh-Padang Besar project already on going, but where is the word of new station plans? Sometimes, we need to know so that our own people can benefitted from it...

I hope they don't wait until Ipoh-Padang Besar project to be completed, then only we start Penang Sentral...ah!

Further postponement
By DERRICK VINESH

THE RM5mil Penang Sentral temporary bus terminal in Butterworth is still not fully operational despite the state authorities having given the assurance that it would officially open in October.

A check by The Star showed a high number of people boarding express buses as well as local buses at the old open-air bus terminal nearby, especially since the school holidays started on Nov 15.

Passengers were seen taking shelter under yellow canopies as well as under a flyover, where makeshift ticketing booths are located.

For commuters, it has been a frustrating seven-year wait for the new terminal to be fully operational.

Brand new: The bus terminal in Butterworth, supposed to be fully operational in October, is currently only utilised by Rapid Penang.

The terminal, which is presently used only by Rapid Penang buses after a soft opening in July, was supposed to be open for use by other local buses and interstate express buses after Hari Raya.

Seberang Prai Municipal Council president Farizan Darus had then said that the council wanted the hawker centre project opposite the new terminal to be completed first.

A council spokesman, when contacted yesterday said the hawkers could not be relocated to the new hawker centre which was completed in September as there was no water supply there.

“We are still discussing the matter with the Penang Water Supply Corporation Sdn Bhd.

Gaping potholes and uneven road surfaces greet bus commuters at the old open-air bus terminal in Butterworth.

“We will invite all 66 hawkers to ballot for their trading lots within the hawker centre next week, so that they can move the moment they get their water supply,” he said, adding that the ticketing booth operators would be relocated to the new terminal soon after.

“We want to ensure that everything is in place before proceeding with the major shift from the old bus terminal to the new one,” said the spokesman.

For the time being, commuters will just have to be more patient and rely on the old terminal.

Kompleks penjaja beroperasi akhir bulan
