Both construction of a new road and improvement of the old one? That's good!

Btw, Finland started to build the new motorway between Hamina and the Russian Border in Spring; should be ready by 2018. What's the Russian timeline for StPB-Finland?

From SPB to 100th km - under reconstruction, will be ready before 2018 (they are a bit ahead of the schedule, so maybe earlier). From 100th km to 134th km (near Vyborg) - in project, planned to finish reconstruction until 2020. The last parts - Vyborg bypass and a part to the border (203rd km) are in project too and reconstruction are planned to be finished after 2020.

I went yesterday and saw very high construction activity on the stretch close to St.Petersburg, they are probably ahead of schedule. I think they will start putting asphalt there soon.

In a democratic country, no motorway construction could start so quickly. Preparation time and tender procedure itself would take few years at least.

Woah, I had no idea they are already building this bridge. Any more information about it ? What about the ports, has this bridge been designed to accommodate for shipping traffic in and out the sea of Azov ?

These are just auxiliary bridges, will help to start working on main bridge (railroad/vehicle) simultaneously on the whole length. Traffic has been rerouted, additional lighting installed to avoid accidents.

The first (technological) auxiliary bridge is almost ready.



Also, almost completed the construction of an energy bridge. It will provide electricity to the peninsula and the second concrete plant for the rapid construction of a bridge over its entire length.

4th section (23km) of "Sortavala" motorway has been opened on September, 11.
Total length is 156km and it should connect St.Petersburg and the capital of Karelia, Petrozavodsk

Почти 23-километровый участок с 2013 года строила компания ЗАО «ВАД» (как и первые три участка «Сортавалы») по контракту стоимостью 15,9 млрд рублей.

Новый четырехполосный участок (по две полосы в каждую сторону) проходит вдали от населенных пунктов, его расчетная пропускная способность – 8 тысяч автомобилей в сутки в обоих направлениях. На участке были построены две эстакады, три путепровода и три транспортные развязки. По характеру асфатобетонного покрытия (крупной фракции) можно узнать стиль «ВАД», – аналогичный с виду асфальт лежит на Невском проспекте Петербурга, который кроме как «ВАД» ремонтировать никому не дают (замена асфальта происходит примерно раз в пять лет, в последний раз производилась в 2013 году). Судить о прочности проезжей части можно по тому, что первый участок «Сортавалы» был открыт в 2011 году и с тех пор его еще не ремонтировали – он находится в хорошем состоянии.

Открывшийся отрезок между 36-39,6 км частично проходит по ранее существующему Приозерскому шоссе и вдоль него. На 40-м километре дорога уходит с Приозерского шоссе в лесной массив. На 53-м километре трасса пересевает региональную дорогу «Подъезд к деревне Новожилово», на 57-м возведена клеверная развязка с автодорогой «Ушково – Гравийное».

Дорога шириной 27,5 м с расчетной скоростью до 120 км/час имеет обочины шириной 3,75 м и пятиметровую разделительную полосу. Наружное освещение есть на развязках, на разворотной петле и площадке отдыха. Стоят также барьерные ограждения, железобетонные ограждения парапетного типа и АСУДД.

Пятый участок между поворотом на Сосново (а в противоположную сторону – в Первомайское) до поселка Лосево (с 57,5 по 81-й км) компания «ВАД» строит в настоящее время по контракту стоимостью 12 млрд рублей. Его должны открыть в 2019 году. Еще несколько отрезков «Сортавалы» сейчас строятся в Карелии.

В конце 2011 года был построен за 1,6 млрд участок с 8-го по 36-й км (от КАД до Агалатово с развязкой в Скотном), второй отрезок длиной 10 километров между Агалатово и Керро стоимостью 2 млрд появился летом 2012 года. Третий – от Керро до разветвления на Новоприозерское и Приозерское шоссе – летом 2013 года.

Новая «Сортавала» имеет длину 153 километра. В перспективе дорога должна соединиться с ключевыми европейскими трассами через Финляндию и создать основу сети региональных дорог. Новая дорога строится как по участкам старого Приозерского шоссе (их реконструировали), так и по лесным землям. При появлении новых участков трассы, идущих параллельно Приозерскому шоссе, они получают статус «Сортавалы», а соответствующий участок Приозерки его утрачивает.

No, there are grade-separated interchanges, but also there are some u-turns in the same level, like this: https://www.google.ru/maps/@60.24892.../data=!3m1!1e3
I am not sure, but I think there are some other compromises which cannot allow this road to be a proper motorway. It has blue signs and speed limit of 90 km/h which means that traffic police was not able to assign it a motorway status.
