^ It's 4-laned untill Nizhny Novgorod.

Great to see pics of M7, especially this section Moscow-Vladimir that I drove in a bus back in 2005.

To me it looks surprisingly good. The motorway surroundings somehow remind me of Poland

KAD Sankt Petersburg

Strange, there are nominally 4 lanes but there's no road marking dividing 2 centermost lanes. Not too safe I must say.

This is one lane, but very wide. As long as you don't overtake from the right, it's actualy a good idea of how to overtake without changing lanes.

I was always amazed by the amount of dirt there, so even the signs above the street are dirty

The signage shows 4 lanes though.

Great pics! I must say it's really dirty though, even signs. How old is the oldest part of the KAD (Sankt-Peterburg)? Some parts look quite dated, especially the ones without lines, why's that? And I didn't know Ekaterinburg had a motorway bypass too. How long is it?

True, I see that my car gets very dirty after like two days of sleet or half-melted snow, so I guess it's much worse in Russia.

I guess the main problem is the sand that gets sprinkled on the roads, which gives extra grip. There are some special salts and chemicals you can use, but they are more expensive and not used as much as they should

Russia is fairly big, so it takes quite a lot of chemicals to clear all roads

chemicals are not good for the cars nor for the environment. so it is better to use plain sand - you can just wash it off without any damage to anything!

When the roadway is a dirty mix of melted snow, sleet, water and sand, and a truck drives by at 80 km/h, you'll get yourself a nice splash behind it, which also affects the signage.
