I've lived in Chicago, a very cold city, for almost a decade and I've never seen anything of the sort. Now Chicago may not be quite as cold as some areas in Russia, but it's a place that gets several feet of snow every winter for long periods of time. I think this may be a case of cold winters intertwined with poor maintenance.

I think type of soil is more important than temperature.

What do they use to clear the roads in winter - a mixture of snow plow + salts? Here they will plow and then place sand/salt mixture for extra grip, which leads to such horrible results

I think we should look into granite chip instead of sand

Quite some traffic there. Also a vivid sign of capitalism in Russia: billboards and ads every 50m of the motorway.

Check this out: a gridlocked cloverleaf in Moscow caused by 3 lanes merging into 2 behind the interchange.

Probably 2X3 (or more) near Moscow and St. Petsburg and 2X2 all way through

BTW look through this thread, there were some posters from Rusavtodor about this motorway, they planned to build it at once first An yes, construction will start, just don't know when

Great roads, but I have never seen motorway quality roads without a center divider before! (Assuming that the speed limit is not 60km/h on those roads)

The construction first section of this motorway (15-58 km) will be start in 2009 near Moscow. Near Moscow it will be 5*2, near St-Petersburg 4*2 and 3*2 all way through.

Too bad there are so few pics of the motorway part, which is quite long. Nice to see one of the oldest Russian motorways (it's visible).
