I understand everything, but just would like to point out that with Soviet Industrial power they could build much more roads. Concrete or alsphalt, no matter. And even now the country has a huge oil refinery power, which as I know is needed to produce bitumen.

In Soviet times there was no reason to build good roads connecting cities that are far apart.

1. There were few cars in the country anyway (people travelled by train or planes). This has changed now, many people have cars. Still, if you wanted to travel across sevral time zones, you would take a train or plane.

2. Russia has very hard climate - in many place winter is 6 months. Roads are killed by such climate, and there is little time to bulid and maintain them. This is still true. It is expensive to build and maintain good roads in Russia. This wil continue to be a factor limiting road construction.

Having said this, they are working on it.

Yeah, AFAIK the passengers in the back of the plane had to communicate with notes because of the noise of the engines. Not really comfortable

I'd have a few questions:

1. I'm looking at the short Russian-Chinese border between Kazakhstan and Mongolia. It says "Renovation of federal roads into regional". Is there really already a (federal) road there? It's very mountainous.

2. Is there any road border crossing planned with North Korea? There's just a railway crossing it now.

3. Is that bridge on the border with Kazakhstan east of Astrakhan already open?

4. Are Russia and China thinking of helping Mongolia to finance paving the "trans-Mongolian" road connecting Russia with China (Ulan-Ude - Ulan Bator - Beijing)? Mongolia obviously isn't capable of doing that.

I'd be thankful, if you knew anything.

As far as I know, that trans-Mongolian road is the only long distance road in Mongolia that's actually paved. The country has like 2500 km of paved road, much of that is the trans-Mongolia route from Russia to China.

No, much of that road isn't paved. Look in GE, pavement ends already at the Chinese-Mongolian border.

Road heating can be done, but it's expensive, and maintenance-sensitive. They have experimented with pipes with hot water, but running +40 C water through a -30 pavement can give some severe damage.

That's why you see suckers trying to defrost their windshield by pouring hot water on it. Usually those suckers ending up pouring water into their car because the window breaks.

Looks like it's paved only between the Russian border and soon after Ulaanbaatar (and perhaps in bigger towns). The rest could be financed mostly by China.

The Asian Development Bank is helping out in the Mongolian road sections a lot:

I hope I drawed the Saratov bypasses/beltway accurately:

Note: not all of it is a motorway, although the northern and western bypasses seem to have cloverleafs and other grade-separation. The southern and eastern parts seems to be a regular road.
