The reconstructed parts of M4 look as good as a German autobahn. And there are lots of reconstructed parts, they are really making this road the best in Russia i suppose.

Medvedev freezes construction of controversial highway

Quote:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on Thursday on the suspension of the construction of a controversial highway north of Moscow, the Kremlin said.

The construction of the Moscow-St. Petersburg highway and the planned destruction of a section of the Khimki forest, part of Moscow's so-called greenbelt, has seen a large-scale grassroots protest movement spring up in Russia. Local residents and environmentalists say economic interests must not outweigh environmental concerns.

Earlier Medvedev said in his video blog that he had ordered the government to suspend the construction.

Russian environmentalists defending the forest were quick to hail the president's decision.

"We are celebrating victory...a victory for civil society... Even if the decision is not final, the fact itself that the president stopped the cutting down [of the forest] is a great victory," one of the activists who defended the forest, Alla Chernyshova, said.

I like PM Mr Putin, not only is he fond of better infrastructure, but he likes trying out the new roads also.

Look forward to this new 'trans-siberian' highway to open in September. If anybody can email Mr Putin to post his pics here that would be great.

Putin to conquer Siberia in yellow Lada

RUSSIAN Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has upped the stakes in his macho exploits - driving 2000 km across Siberia in a canary yellow Lada.

Accompanied by television cameras, Mr Putin set out on the grueling drive between the far eastern city of Khabarovsk and Siberia's Chita in one of the world's most-mocked cars.

He took the wheel of a brand-new Lada Kalina Sport, produced by Avtovaz, which the government previously supported with huge investment.

He was shown filling up the boxy car, which has tinted windows and a jaunty Lada logo on its side, and driving past a sign reading "Chita 1910km."

The trip came after Mr Putin watched a brown bear in the wild and chased a grey whale in rough seas in the remote region of Kamchatka as part of a working trip to the Far Eastern region.

Lada's makers asked him to test the car, Mr Putin said in comments published on his website, adding that he did not plan to drive it himself all the way and did not pick the color, which he called "youthful".

He need not fear a breakdown, since Russian television showed that the hatchback was accompanied by the Prime Minister's usual cortege of sleek black jeeps, which dwarfed the modest yellow Lada.

He will drive along a new highway that is the first-ever road to cross the remote wilderness between Siberia and Far Eastern Russia, previously only passable by rail or air. The road is due to open for traffic in September.

"This is a significant event for Russia, in a certain sense historic," Mr Putin said in comments published on his website, since Russia "has never in its history -- never! -- been fully linked up with highways."

His trip is a major publicity coup for Avtovaz, which was plunged into crisis by the economic slowdown and still struggles to shake off the Lada's poor image, which became the butt of numerous jokes abroad.

Niva or UAZ Patriot would have been a better choice for such trip.

I guess the idea is to show you don't need a jeep-like car anymore to travel M58.

It's just a Lada commercial. Putin makes it not for the first time. I remember him advertising Lada Kalina also before.

For me it's the grey car who's almost thrown off the road so Putin can pass him in his minicar.

For sure you go to see the same on any country, not only Russia and for sure he was warned before he reached that place.

The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards - and even then I have my doubts. Gene Spafford.
I am Basque, not Russian, the "Siberia" thing is a joke.

But the lights are off, which means that those cars aren't (shouldn't be) treated as emergency vehicles.

And even if by some quirk of the law it is legal, it certainly isn't safe. Or very smart.
