How can you see that they are off?

It is safe, because there 2 police cars which go before motorcade and stop all the cars.

It is first of all stupid rather than unsafe. I don't know what did he want to achieve with that. To show how great car Lada is or to make some road-success (?) propaganda?

It is very useful to see how people live in the far East, not from the window of the goverment airplane. You can see even camping in his motorcade.

I've done some googling and it's not that cheap. There is no official dealership in Poland, but there are some individual importers. You can get a new Kalina for 38200PLN, which is 9500€. For the same money you can have a Skoda Fabia with worse engine but much better equipment (4 airbags for example), and if you'd negotiate for a while (or wait untill December and buy the 2010 model) I think that you could get the better engine (i.e. comparable to this in Kalina) without any significant price bump.
But probably the Kalina is cheaper in countries with Lada dealership.

Estonia has a Lada dealership and the price of a 5-door Kalina starts from € 8,000.

In Russia starts from 257 000 roubles or about 6500 euro.
They are going to launch new super cheap car called Lada Granta (from 4k euro) and probably deliver to WE

For this money you could get a decent 2005-2006 Audi A4... are you sure Lada prices are that high?

vs.

Are you sure that A4 2005-2006 cost 8000 only?

A have A6 2002 which I bought last year for 13000 euro. A also owned Lada Priora for 2 years before and didn't have any problems with Lada. One of advantages was good 16 valve engine of Lada, it was about 100 hps and gas usage on the 5th gear when driving 100-120 was only 5.5l (according to trip computer).
For the last year I had to fix A6 twice, once spring in suspension broken (500e) and once something was wrong with window cleaner (180e). This kind of services for Lada coast much cheaper. And gas consumption is 2 times higher.

Imported cars are, of course, more expensive in Russia. I'm talking of EU.

Of course, it would not be a top-spec A4 but still a decent one. And I really doubt that a 2L turbodiesel A4 would take "twice" as much fuel. Fuel economy on such an engine would, in fact, probably be about the same and is among the best in the class.

I bought mine in Finland, 2l engine and gas usage is about 9l on the highway, in a city about 15l. Tax for diesel cars in Finland by some reasons a few times higher than for benzine, you won't save much.

Custom tax for imported used cars in Russia is really high, but new ones cost very cheap - because most of the world car makers (or almost all) already opened assembly plants in Russia. For example, you can buy new Ford Focus for 10k euro.

No doubt buying a 2002-2005 Audi or any other western car (in good shape) is much better than new Lada. Russian government knows it and tries to block car import to Russia by high customs tax. In fact Russians are very unhappy about that like we saw in Kaliningrad few days ago.

I see that you know Russia very well. High custom taxes for cars in Russia are made only because russian goverment wants to invite corporations to build car plants in Russia. Most of foreign cars which are sold in Russia are made in Russia and here is huge variety of models from Chevrolet Lacetti to BMW X6 and Cadillac Escalade. For russian-made cars taxes are much lower. For example one the most popular cars is Ford Focus. Russian-made Ford Focus in Russia is cheaper than same one in Germany.

In Russia:

Starting at 10.975 Euro

http://www.ford.ru/Cars/Focus/Pricelistsandfinance

In Germany

Starting at 16.750 Euro

Hard to tell in the pic though. For all we know, they may have only had lights behind the radiator grille going.
