They are not ecologists, first just people who lived nearby of planned highway, now just joined politicians who are holding own PR campaign on that (this reminds me situation with Okhta centre).
Form the ecological point of view, harm to nature is close to zero.

They should just call independent people from some other country to assess the situation. Maybe that forest really is very valuable, who knows? I suspect though that these are just local interests. Let's hope the projects resumes asap.

What about calling some Chinese? They would build a 5+5 elevated motorway from Moscow all the way to Vladivostok and maybe add a 400km/h high-speed train line to the package all of which would be complete by 01/01/2011

Haha, hilarious!

About the "ecologist", the unfortunate thing about where I'm living is that this city (and country) is full of them. At least around Vaasa, there is some projects that's been planned etc. but then one of the thousand NIMBY's comes up with some spider they found in the forest 30 years ago and now have started to collect names so that the road/whatever won't be built and so the avalanche is moving once again. Same thing about power, people complain and whine about Nuclear Power plants in Finland and we should seek alternatives like wind power, but on the same time people say that they're making "too much noise", "look ugly" etc.

But anyway, I hope that the Russian entrepeneurs/decision makers can make a turn if the case is as in the article posted about this sad decision about the money. Sorry for off-topic.

The Chinese have the luxury of ignoring all such "ecologists", so perhaps this is why they are able to develop their infrastructure so fast?

No valuation at all. It's just a tiny forgotten usual wild forest.
It's currently planned go around the east edge of the park to make an independent way to airport to reduce traffic on Mezhdunaronoye shosse. "Ecologists" insist to knock down buildings on the west side, to make it parallel to M1, so Mezhdunarodnoye shosse will have both traffics from M1 and new Moscow-SPb motorway. Notice there is a luxury housing on the east side of the forest and inside of it. So guess who can pay for that and where those "ecologists" were, when that luxury village inside of the forest was being built.

And originally it was planned to knock down the forest entirely to built large municipal housing district.

How about just ignoring the NIMBYs? Or do they actually have a lot of support, for some reason?

Mmm, my major is environmental engineering, most of people have no idea what you are talking about. 950 mil are already in starvation more like 2 billions in next decade will suffer from starvation and even more from water shortage.

One casual forest around Moscow will change nothing because Russia have millions of square km of them in the same climate and no special animal reside there. Some local people living next to it will protest of course.

As for the world in 50 years most of living people may be jealous to dead people... Those who young -> you watch.

I think the most important factor here is that the decision makers (politicians) only thinks about getting votes, and if there are many NIMBY's they are afraid to lose lot of votes in the next elections.. At least this is the case here.

Last decade people were satisfied with stability after liberal experiments of 90s, nowadays that's not already enough, will see a lot of protests ahead.

Various opposition politicians are trying to stirr this issue and get votes

It looks great. Is "Primorskij koljec" a Kaliningrad ringroad?

Chita-Khabarovsk in 11 minutes and 35 seconds

Absolutely phenomenal transformation of the road in just a few years. Simply look up on youtube what the road looked just some two years ago

Fantastic
