For those asking about driving in the Far East of Russia, from Chita to Vladivostok, Google now offers standard driving directions:

A bit disappointed the link in my last post did not show the route highlighted in blue, but if you click on the get directions button and first remove the words "driving directions" in front of Chita, ... it will work.

They say it will take over 300 hours, and involve a ferry trip and tolls.

So why would you propose that? How about carrying a knife or a long chain?

Excuse my ignorance, is that it has so many Russians in the topic and I could never get those doubts...

Speaking of Olympics and Sochi. Is the border from Georgia (via Abkhazia) still closed? Which if it is, the only choice would be Azerbaijan to Russia.

You should be able to travel from Georgia via Abkhazia to Russia. Border from Abkhazia to both Russia and Georgia are open. The other way around is not possible, because Georgia treats this as illegal entry into Georgia, and you could end up in a Georgian jail.

There is also a border directly connecting Russia and Georgia, near Kazbegi (Georgia). It is however only open to citizens of CIS countries.

If it's open only to citizens of CIS countries, it shouldn't be an E-road (E117).

Could be that the restriction to CIS-citizens only came after this route was numbered E117. But in either case, the situation is no worse than the non-existent ferries in the E-network.

E-routes have been routed on the basis of idealism rather than reality. A useful political tool maybe, but motorists would have been better off with a system that looks at real life situations.

As I understand it, no it's not. And if you go to a country thinking the police are corrupt and that guns are the solution, you are likely to get into an awful lot of trouble - in jail for several years or dead. In most of Europe, the only people allowed to keep weapons nowadays are farmers and some security companies.
