So why did the tiny republics of the Baltic then have such huge urban expressways (2x4 Laagna road in Tallinn, several 2x3 in Riga, Vilnius and Kaunas, for example)? Was car ownership higher in these republics? I mean, a huge motorway network in Moscow would've been a powerful symbol of power.

New Moscow – Saint-Petersburg speedway is the largest and the most important national project. The speedway crosses the territory of industrially developed regions populated by approximately 25 million people (18% of the population of the country).

The length of the route from Moscow encircling highway to Saint-Petersburg encircling highway is about 650 km. Width of the carriageway is 10 traffic lanes at the border of Moscow, 8 lanes on the territory of Leningrad and Moscow regions and 6 lanes on the territory of Tver and Novgorod regions. All the highway’s proportions are calculated taking into account that the rate of movement will make 150 km/h.

Is this motorway under construction?

Construction has been started on most complicated stretch of the central part of Western Speed Diameter (or ZSD, ЗСД, Западный Скоростной Диаметр). It will go along the shore, few bridges and tunnel are going to be constructed.

Price 60bln rubles (1.5 bln euro)

Here is technology that is going to be used:

Yes, it's all about car ownership. The rate of the cars per 1000 persons in Lithuania is one of the highest in EU as i remember. This is because of that that people think if they have a car so they can forget or ignore public transport. The other thing is that the public transport in Vilnius is far from the best. We don't even have trams! The mayor of Vilnius has just made a some kind of "revolution" in public transport - added some fast buses, painted a lot of Bus/taxi/4+ lanes and so on. Most of those lanes were painted in overcrowded 2x2 streets and leaving just one lane for each side. The traffic jams became bigger than they used to be in the summer. I'm affraid to think of what will happen in september and a lot of people will return to the city.

What is the busiest road in Russia and how much is it AADT? I figure there are many roads in Moscow which AADT surpass 200 000.

I don't think where is anything to do with car ownership, especially with current car ownership.

I haven't seen any traffic data of Russian roads, but Los Angeles shows 250,000 - 300,000 is possible on motorways with 2x5 lanes. MKAD is entirely 2x5 lanes, so 200,000+ is quite likely there.

In addition, I think some of the ultra-wide boulevards in Moscow may be the busiest roads with traffic lights in the world.

Yeah, I was talkin' about motorways being constructed in _Soviet times_ in the Baltics but not in Russia.

These are not expressways but dual carriage roads, with crossings, u-turns and most of them without barriers.

Those are true expressways. There are much more 2+2 roads.

If you filter the Russian road network for substandard elements such as U-turns, undivided roadways, at-grade intersections and pedestrian crossings, you get about 2000 kilometers of motorway (-like roads).

M-4 - almost entire route. There are few sections left, but they should be completed within few years.
MKAD
TTK
M-2 - about 150 km of Moscow
M-9 - about 120 km of Moscow
Yaroslavskoye highway - 100+ km of Moscow
Some sections of M-10 - at least 50 km in Tver province.
KAD in Saint Petersburg
ZSD in Saint Petersburg
Kemerovo - Novokuznetsk. Don't remember route number.
Ufa - Salavat. Don't remember route number.
M-1 - some 50km of Moscow.
And some more smaller.

@coth, true expressways are 100% non-colission, with barierrs and without u-turns. There are only about 600 km of true motorways/expressways in Russia, most of them in Moscow and Petersburg area.

This is how expressway looks like.

well yes, but only if you "filter" them like ChrisZwolle said, you drive a non-collision road and suddenly there is a crossing, then again non-collision stretch and again u-turn, it's hard to classify such roads as expressways, well at least they wouldn't be marked as expressways in EU.

I just listed them you. And there is no necessity in barriers if directions are separated. Almost all US expressways built in this way.

Right but I've been to US and never seen U-turns or crossings on their motorways.
