Only one Nordstrom in the whole state?! Wow, I guess Connecticut is small. There is probably more than one in Houston.

Alaska is huge, yet there is only one Nordstrom there (Anchorage 5th Ave mall). And, there is only one in Pennsylvania (King of Prussia Mall) and one Nordstrom Rack in the same area.

My, my...

So how did this thread reach 4 pages without mentioning the original climate-controlled shopping mall?

The mall that served as the model of all American shopping malls, inventing the "dumbell" philosophy of putting two major department stores at the extreme ends of the structure in order to generate traffic between them?

Southdale

Built in 1956. Designed by Victor Gruen. It became the model of nearly all modern climate-controlled shopping malls in the US.

Ironically, Gruen hated the model of post-war suburbia. He actually envisioned Southdale to become an alternative "city center" for Edina, Minnesota, a very wealthy suburb of Minneapolis.

It has been, of course, superseded by the largest mall in the US (just a few miles away from Southdale): Mall of America, which is pursuing a 5.2-million-square-foot expansion that will make it the largest in the world. The Mall of America is currently the largest tourist destination of all world malls, with more than 40 million visitors annually.

Has anybody posted South Coast Plaza yet? This Mall in Orange county does about 90% of the total sales volume of downtown San Francisco and anchors the Flagship store for Nordstroms.

It was weird to watch their faces thinking that we have never seen a mall or something. They were stomping around like they invented the greatest thing on the planet or something.

I played naive like I have never seen a mall in my life and hopefully some day the North will become as sophisticated as the desert mexico/texas tumbleweed area where we were.

BTW this was the dallas Area where I guess everyone loveS the indoor Malls, it must be a new concept to the rebs or something because every local thought is more important then sliced bread.

Indoor malls are great when the heat index iS 120 plus from May to October but what really weirded my out was when NO one would venture out of the air conditioning to be outdoors and play golf, jog, interact with the human species, ect.

I would hate to EXIST IN A self imposed air conditioned prison for as long as those that suffer in the metroplex from what I have seen.

I have been down into mexico and texas around 5 times and I guess it will only be a short matter of time before Mexico reclaims its ancestral lands and such.

From what I know, Oklahoma’s olds stolen Indian reservations will hold a lot of displaces gringos after the Mexican government redirects the non native population out of their ancestral homesteads.

Also a question to texas Rebs, what does ya'll mean? Is it a negative connotation to try to slander the educated Union North of the Mason Dixon line or does it imply the general population of the born again red states that are still fighting the Civil War?

WTF are you talking about?

Back to malls...

In the Seattle area, we have a pretty large trend where existing malls add square footage, and make this possible by converting some of their surface parking to structured parking. This has been happening at:
--Bellevue Square (regional)
--Southcenter (regional)
--Alderwood (regional)
--Northgate (regional)
--University Village (prototypical lifestyle center)

Also, since our region is focusing on infill and we don't have room for new malls anyway, anything new is usually "new urbanist" in format or simply in a stacked format. Major examples include The Landing, Kent Station, Redmond Town Center, Northgate North...

For similar reasons, we're getting quite a few new/rebuilt supermarkets with housing on top. Most are inside the Seattle city limits but not all -- one is u-c in Downtown Bellevue for example. This is especially exciting because older supermarkets are often "black holes" in the middle of pedestrian-oriented shopping districts, and these projects not only fill gaps but add good density.

It's a West coast store, so it took some time. It came in 1996 during Westfarm's expansion.

There will probably be no more new department stores in the state, so no more Nordstrom in the future. The land here is too expensive and the benefits are razor-thin.

That's good. It probably helps protect the natural beauty of the area.

Shopping centers in Phoenix/Scottsdale

Here are some photos from around the web of popular shopping centers in Phoenix/Scottsdale.

Kierland Commons
This was the first "lifestyle center" in the Phoenix area, located in North Scottsdale. They host a lot of arts/culinary events in the streets around the center. Lots of restaurants, clubs, condos, apartments, and stores.

Fashion Square
The largest mall in Arizona, and among the top 15 largest in the country. Located in Old Town/downtown Scottsdale.

Recently constructed Scottsdale Waterfront, directly across from Fashion Square. Two condo towers, lotsa restaurants and shops, can just see behind the Palm Trees.

Borgata
Only a couple miles north of downtown Scottsdale. Once a premiere luxury shopping center, now its more local boutiques and restaurants.

Biltmore
One of the older shopping centers in Arizona and in one of Phoenix's prime business districts, the Biltmore.
