Surprised no one has posted Lenox Square or Phipps Plaza in ATL.
Phipps Plaza ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Pretty upscale mall, and there are a lot of nice stores like Versace, Valentino, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Roberto Coin, Tiffany's, Bally, Mezlan, Elie Tahari, Tory Burch, Giorgio Armani, Vera Bradley, Intermix, Barney's New York CO-OP, MaxMara, Wolford, Vince, Theory, Cole Haan, Lucky Brand Jeans, Benetton, Anne Fontaine, Bang & Olufsen, among others. Its anchors are Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Belk. Lenox Square ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Unlike Phipps Plaza, which have a peaceful vibe to it, Lenox Square is very busy and bustling. It is also considerably bigger than Phipps Plaza. Read somewhere that is was the 8th busiest mall in the US. Anyway, it's less expensive than Phipps, but more upscale than the typical American mall. Stores include Diesel, Bvlgari, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ed Hardy, Louis Vuitton, French Connection, Cartier, Nicole Miller, Burberry, Faconnable, Zara, Michael Kors, Salvatore Ferragamo, Calvin Klein, Ecco, David Yurman, Victoria's Secret, Club Monaco, True Religion, 7 For All Mankind, Puma, Vidal Sassoon, among others. Its anchors are Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale's. These two are across each other diagonally.

Here in Austin and San Antonio there are two very new open-air malls. La Cantera and the Domain. Both are really big.
La Cantera has the shape and layout of a traditional enclosed mall, all its missing is the roof. The Domain is part of a larger "urban" development with residential buildings though I think it's a little schlocky(but then it could become what the Galleria area is to Houston, so give it time). |

Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque. The typical boxes in an amoebic sea of parking.

ABQ Uptown, a new lifestyle center in the heart of Albuquerque. Lifestyle centers have replaced the traditional indoor mall with their faux-urbanism and Main Street feel. As far as I know, only one entirely new indoor mall has been built in the US in the last decade.

![]() The now demolished Valley Fair Mall here in Appleton, WI first opened as an enclosed mall shopping center on 1954-08-11, Southdale opened two years later. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_...hopping_Center (note, the article says 'August 11, 1955', the first part with six stores opened on that date in 1954) Mike Last edited by mgk920; May 22nd, 2010 at 06:58 PM. |

I visited Las Vegas a few weeks ago, and while there may be some debate with this statement there are in fact "entirely new indoor mall(s)" that have been built there in the last 10 years... including "Crystals" at City Center (500,000 square feet, indoors). |

Austrian architect Victor Gruen invented the "dumbell concept" of locating anchor stores at opposite ends and creating a indoor "street" connecting the two and lined with shops. Ironically, he was a socialist who hated American suburbs.

Cool interior of Crystal Retail Center! Good to know that mall is busy even this economy is recovering slowly and fewer stores opened. I think the interior design is great but it is seen like a lot of waste spaces (Tons of white walls where it could be use for more retail spaces).
