The current line has become somewhat of a bottleneck, with basically every train going westwards from Copenhagen using that line (since it is the only one at the moment.
Especially the line Høje Taastrup - Roskilde even with it's 4 tracks has reached it's max. capacity. And for the last approx. 20 years, it has been so. I have tried to make a quick rundown of which trains uses the line right now:
*Regional trains to Ringsted, Holbæk and Nykøbing Falster, 2 trains/hour each and in both directions (ie. 6 trains/hour each way).
*InterCity trains to Fyn and Jylland, at least two lines with one train/hour, both ways
* And a number of cargo trains.

So, the new line serves 2 primary goals:
1. "Relieve the pressure" from the old line
2. Enable faster trains between the large cities

The fact that it will be possible to route trains to Femern that way, perhaps via Køge Nord and the southern part of Lille Syd to Næstved, is just "extra icing on the cake" to use a modern expression.

We are talking about the Ringsted Fehmarn line so its build just for the Fehmarn tunnel but with the added bunus of reduced travel time from Lolland and Falster to Copenhagen.

With the upgraded Sydbanen, New Storstrøm Bridge and the Copenhagen Ringsted high speed line the trip from Nykøbing F to Copenhagen will take 1 hour instead of almost 1,5 hour.

I thought this thread was about the new line Copenhagen (or technically, Ny Ellebjerg) - Køge Nord - Ringsted. As for the Sydbanen, it is like you mentioned "only" an upgrade of an old line; even if some parts of the line is being ajusted, like between Ringsted and Glumsø.

The first 18 out of a total of 100 bridges on Sydbanen (Ringsted-Femern) has been completed. The new bridges are higher (to allow for electrical wiring), in some cases wider (as the old bridges often were 100 years old and not designed for modern vehicles, tractors etc) to accomodate for a new double-track, electrified rail line.

The opening of new Vestergade in Eskilstrup meant the closing of the last grade crossing on Sydbanen for motor vehicles. Passengers going aboard or off the train in Eskilstrup may still use the old grade crossing for another year, until the station has been renovated and equipped with a passenger bridge.

The beginning of the end for the IC4 and IC2 scandal.
The first 5 of the Ansaldo Breda train sets, being salvaged for usable spare parts before being cut up. These sets never actually ran in service.

Old news but not reported here yet, the electrical wires from Lunderskov to Esbjerg is now activated.

Only the last part at Esbjerg station and the huge freight yard is not live yet.

They will close off the station on the 10th of April to test the system and it is expected that it will be activated just after the Easter break.

Delivery date is still on the 1st of May.

They have started on the electrification work on the new high speed line just last week.

For now nothing is visible around Køge but these pictures shows that it doesn´t look like a construction site anymore.

But in my mind it doesn´t look like a real railroad before the catenary poles and wires are up.

The way it looks now, it looks like an average British mainline railway to me

The last pillar is in place at Køge Nord, only the scaffolding is left to be removed.

The first passenger train has been on a "test" run on the new high speed line, since ERTMS 2 isn´t installed yet the train with employees from Banedanmark was limited to 40 km/h.

The pillars at Køge Nord station is done.

The foundation for the catenary poles has reached as far as around Vemmedrup.
