LEICESTER | Abbey Quarter (Morris Homes), Abbey Park Road | App

Another exciting development on Abbey Park Road, which is to be developed by Morris Homes on the site of the former Miles Platts site (now relocated). Various blocks of apartments are to be built, with a maximum of 9 storeys and numbering more than 300.

The buildings presently on the site have now mostly been flattened and there are now signs up showing a render of the development.

The land is now totally clear for development now and I assume work will soon start on the apartments.

From today's Leicester Mockery

Quote:

WHAT A DIFFERENCE 10 YEARS WILL MAKE
BY MARTIN ROBINSON
POLITICAL REPORTER

10:30 - 31 July 2008

A former industrial area of the city is 10 years away from being "completely transformed", council bosses have said.

Leicester City Council has given permission to build more than 150 homes on Abbey Meadows, which is seen as another key part of regenerating the area.

Bestway Holdings is planning a mix of 66 family three and four-bedroom properties with 93 apartments with one or two bedrooms.

Bestway's cash and carry moved from the Abbey Meadows site to a new depot in Loughborough Road, Belgrave, in 2006.

The area earmarked for the development is bounded by the River Soar, the canal and Abbey Park, and has a capacity for 2,000 homes.

A science park is also planned for the nearby former John Ellis school, while a second business site, near the National Space Centre, will consist of seven acres of units for larger, established companies.

It is hoped this will create thousands of jobs.

Regeneration boss councillor Patrick Kitterick says plans for the area are all "moving in the right direction".

He said: "I have no doubt that in 10 years we will all see a major change in that part of the city. You only have to walk around it now to see how the area is being prepared for this regeneration.

"Once the large building projects start the regeneration project as a whole will gain momentum."

Malcolm Carter, head of property at Bestway Holdings, says he hoped its plan would kickstart this momentum.

He said: "I would like to think that we would be starting within the next couple of years.

"We have scaled down the size of our project to show our commitment and we really want to lead by example in the area."

Morris Homes is building 305 apartments on the former Miles Platts site.

The separate conversion of the Shoe Factory into 44 loft apartments on the Wolsey Island is set to be completed this year.

Planning applications have been submitted for 1,600 homes on the former Courtauld and British United Shoe Machinery sites.

The Leicester Regeneration Company claims that the development of Abbey Meadows is as important as the regeneration of the city centre and the establishment of a business quarter close to the city's railway station.

Its chief executive John Nicholls say these combined elements will help the city get national recognition.

He said: "Put these all together and I know people across the country are seeing what is going on in Leicester and really taking notice."

It says Autumn 2009, so they must still have the intention of building these properties.

I hate these renders, what is with architects and their facination with multicoloured buildings - they look cheap cheap cheap and nasty. Why couldn't they stick with the original design renders ffsake!

The only recent addtion to the site seems to be a make-shift marketing office for the 'Abbey Quarter'. Hopefully there will be some building work starting soon then.
