Well it can and does compete with City Centres is a great example of that, free parking and easy access. by train tram bus and car. But once again this thread is about new shops in the City centre!!

from here

It makes no odds really.

Leeds is far in advance of Sheffield city centre for most shopping markets, especially window shoppers, and barring a miraculous change always will be. But Meadowhall in Sheffield, caters better for the family market than Leeds or White Rose does in my opinion, free parking, train, tram and bus station on site, late shopping all year, family attractions all year, creche facilties on site, weather proof (unless it floods ). Meadowhall is certainly more than just a Christmas destination, it also comes into its own for people who need something when your avrage city centres are snoozing.

Sheffield City Centre will get there, Meadowhall serves its purpose, together they are adequate now and will improve and offer much for many people.

The stores I'm thinking of are not your run of the mill every city, every town shops like Next, Topshop, Reiss, Zara, Mango, Ted Baker, ect ect these shops will be in the NRQ i have no doubt, I'm thinking more, Diesel, Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas Originals, stores that you would head to a destination for because there only 4 or 5 across the whole country.
Forget Harvey Nichols, a Sheffield football club will win the Premiership before either a Harvey Nichols or Selfridges open up a store in the city centre

Yeah they maybe exclusive now but only because they are new to the UK well Abercrombie and Addidas original and could you name one person who would travel any distance to go to an Diesel store. If you really wanted to buy anything Diesel you could get it from Rebuplic?

With regard to Abercrombie they are only considered to be an exclusive brand in the UK because until before now they didn't have a single store here. If they do decide to expand in the UK I cant see any reason why they wouldn't build a store in Sheffield or Meadowhall, they are hardly an exclusive designer shop. They have 14 shops in Ohio alone, not to mention 45 in Calfornia I'd hardly call that exclusive.

I certainly would for a pair of Diesel Jeans, Republic don't sell them.

Right Mr Meadowhall

1/ Yes it maybe easy to get yourself Diesel gear in USC or Republic, but there's certain lines that they keep back for there boutique stores

2/ Yes Abercrombie is exclusive in the UK for precisely the reason you have stated, because up until the recent opening of it's Bond St store you couldn't buy it in the UK apart from on e-bay (where it was doing a roaring trade I might add), yes it is cheap in the US and there are loads of A & F shops but items of fashion that are hard to get hold of will always be desirable and fashionable it the ways it works and people will travel far and wide to get those items.

Mr Meadowhall??? Why??? I seem to be one of the few people on this thread actually sticking up for Sheffield City Centre!!

I do understand the basis of supply and demand its basically what I've spent 3 years doing at Uni. I was simply stating that if A & F choose to expand which as a commercial enterprise you would imagine they would unless they are going to sell every item of clothing for £80 - 90 plus they will. So you would imagine they would expand to everywhere like they have done in the US.

All I was saying is your arguments against Sheffield Centre becoming a shopping destination don't stand up. You've yet to name one store other than the obvious Selfridges and Havey Nics which would attrach floods and floods of people.

it says in the telegraph that a new planning application has been put forward to turn the old salvation army citadel into two shops. sounds much healthier than the last application for that one, turning it into a comedy cowboy restaurant....oh dear!

True, and Leeds' wont come til 2011 at the earliest most likely. Manchester and Birmingham also dont have John Lewis; you have to go got Solihull, Cheadle or the Trafford Centre. Bristol doesnt have a John Lewis either- theirs is at Cribbs Causeway. So its quite good to have a central John Lewis.

Yes this is much better, as it's a lovely building and if done right would be an assett to the city centre. We didn't want the "cowboy place" there, I've been to the one in Gatehead and believe me we didn't want that there, down't Cliffe would have been more appropriate

yep, if we all drink enough we could really form a city council and make some good decisions. although we would probably end up with hundreds of skyscrapers, a monorail, a ban on chavs, a limitation to 4 starbucks, an excess of greasy food places, an exemption from prosicution for urinating outside, and undoubtedly 300 more fountains to run through.
