Heading north brings us into the hood known as Beford Pk. It goes from 198th St, with Dr Theodore Kazimiroff Blvd, to Mosholou Pkwy between Jerome Ave and the Bronx River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was farmland for the most part of its early days. In 1831, the NY & Harlem RR was built to allow for transportation to Manhattan as well as the Hudson Valley. Durring the mid 1800's, Pierre Lorillard IV had his tobacco mill here and ran it until he died, though he did give up part of the land through time. In 1878, the 3rd Ave El was built to allow for inner city transit to Manhattan. In 1880, the are was laid out and was known as Bedford Pk after the town in England with the same name. In 1891, the NY Botanical Garden was built as a nature preserve for this area. Most of the construction was of Queen Annie houses and tudor style apartments. In 1973, the 3rd Ave El was demolished and its route was replaced by buses. The NY Botanical Garden serves as a major site to Bedford Pk as both a conservatory for plants as well as a research center for botanists. You can get here by taking the subway to Bedford Pk Blvd-Lehman College (4), Mosholou Pkwy-Jerome Ave (4), and Bedford Pk Blvd-Grand Concourse (B, D) as well as the Harlem Line of Metro-North RR to the Botanical Garden Station. Here is what you will see in Beford Pk.
