Chesterfield Projects Thread

We discussed it, so here it is. Chesterfield.

To start off with, the new football stadium plans. Hoping to start the 2008/9 season in the new stadium, it is to be located in Whittington Moor on teh A61 Sheffield Road. The site is to be developed by Wilson Bowden. It looks very generic but should be a huge improvement

Facility-wise it will be an improvement. There will be better car parking, refreshments, hi-tech turnstiles and more seats.

On the other hand, it is characterless and looks like 20 or 30 other new, out-of-town stadiums. Fans will no longer be able to easily walk to the ground from the city centre, and probably not be able to stand either. There will be no "kop" as such and the atmosphere will be quieter. To compensate, they will probably play loud, anthem-style music after each goal like they do at the Arena when the Steelers play.

Still, I guess anything new is progress, isn't it?

These appear to be the first city living style luxury apartments to be built in Chesterfield, called Bradbury Place on Chatsworth Road.

I would fancy buying one of those though because Bradbury Hall which used to sit on the site of these new apartments was very haunted! Infact I can't believe the building was demolished to make way for these generic flats!

I don't know Chesterfield very well but I found myself diverting through it last week due to the M1 being closed and there's a huge amount of redevelopment going on around the "Frankie and Bennie" roundabout in the town centre - some sort of retail park and a load of new apartments by the looks of things. the inside word is that there's a b+q going up at the roundabout.

there's more stuff about chezzie here http://www.chesterfieldbc.gov.uk/sit....asp?CATID=660

Lovely Stylized render. Hows reality ! Is it those that East Midland construction are building or is it next door, not been past since christmas.

And is that "Would buy one of these" or Would not "because Haunted" ?
Was the old place not buttchered to make "night club", the some locals wanted it shut down and others wanted to retain building.

That's a Would Not because it was haunted lol! Large parts of the hall was butchered when it was run as a nightclub up until it closed, but the oldest part of the hall could have been rescued as that was largely untouched.

Apparently it was haunted by the ghost of a young girl called Martha who accidently hung herself in the halls attic, a black ghost cat and in the late 90s a guy clubbed his girlfriend to death behind the hall, her screams can apparently still be heard.

Great pic at top of thread OranjS3

Good link Alfie, the Waterfront development on Arnold Lavers site is designe to form the new start(end to chesterfield canal which has been discused on Muddycoffee's abandond roads thread. On which the Brimmington and Staveley bypass is talked about. Part of the bypass is being built as a link to the new M1 J29A as part of the Markam vale regeneration scheme.
The proposed souther section follows the route of the canal for several miles. The cheaterfield canal trust are trying to restor it with the council and others. A large part was destored by opencast mining and other bits filled in, but it is (has) been restored. Ultimatly they whant ot join back up to the main canal near Kiveton were it terminates. A big problem is at Kilamarsh part of the route was built on and the Norwood tunnel has colapsed which cut the chasterfield end off.

My home town mentioned at last! I regularly read the Sheff threads as I love the city and spent my school career at a Sheffield school.

I live and work in Chesterfield, my office is 2mins walk from the Bradbury Place apartments development which isn't quite the disgrace that Bersamim called it, the render hardly does the scale of the development justice, there been a further three blocks to a similar scale. The previous building was a mish mash of styles, having had numerous previous owners, its uses limited and as plans were put forward originally for a new nightclub, local residents have gotten a better deal. The development is being built by Steve Perez (local lad and owner of the Vodka Kick brand), the spec and finish is of a high quality, certainly better than many other similiar developments that have occurred throughout the town over the past few years. This is probably the 4th development of 'city' type apartments in the town with many more planned on the old Arnold Lavers site, plans for which I believe allow for several areas of buildings upto 7/8 floors with the plan for a marina to be part of an extension of the Chesterfield canal.

The Horns Bridge roundabout development is known as the 'Chesterfield Gateway' and will include primarily office space but also a non-DIY retail unit which I understand to be an Asda Home store. The huge site to the south of this area and adjoining it is currently been redeveloped by Barratt and is been constructed over a 10 yr period to include apartments and a mix of town and detached housing.

The new stadium site is part of the A61 corridor redevelopment and will also include a retail outlet (B&Q warehouse possibly), this retailer is due to be announced soon and planning is to be put forward hopefully by Nov which the council is understood to be eager to approve anyway as this has been dragging on for years.

Anyway thats the info I have!

I wasn't commenting on the new development, it was the loss of the existing house which drew that response from me. It looked like a significant building in the photo, one which could have been preserved as a focus for any new development around it.

I admit the house or as it was known; Bradbury Hall, would have been worth saving. It had a long history as been built by the Robinson family (owners of a large packaging company in the town not so long ago) and served as I believe their staff canteen and entertainment venue. In more recent years it was been used as a function venue but for about 8/10 years prior to demolition it had been various nightclubs which unfortunately attracted the 'wrong sort' and local residents were kicking up. It was a difficult site to redevelop keeping the exisiting building there and I'm guessing the council subsided and gave the apartments the green light allowing the developer maximum profit in exchange for some much needed investment in this area.

It has greatly improved the area (Chatsworth Road) and has had a knock on effect even before they are completed, with new two tier retail units and large contemporary restaurant to be built either side of the site......will take some photos when I can get away from my desk.

And should we have Chesterfield in the Sheffield forum? Well I reckon so! Sheffield's expansion and development is having a knock on effect here, its not as expensive to buy property here...we're 20 mins drive away, its a great town with good rail/ motorway links. A lot of money is been invested at the moment and this looks set to continue, all bar a recession for some years to come...

Forgot about that its been on and off for 20 odd years. It at the side of the Dronfield by pass at Sheepbridge / Unstone. They open cast it about 1980, and the built abit of a golf course on the site. Its a large site bounded by the bypass, river drone, Unstone, and a small forest that the bypass was built through. The 80's recession killed it originally.

Demolition starts on Council Elderly persons residence at Dronfield. The old system built prefabricated building is being torn down to be replaced with anew £5m Care home and sheltered accomadation to be built by FrankHaslan Millan.

The new building will be up to 5 stoery high and looks like typical apartments with a mix of brick and render and multi level roofs.

Unable to photo old building as surounded by trees as has been empty for over a year.
