No one said about it on news press. maybe just based on the renderings, the swimming facility zone seems to be excluded from the project.. on the rendering, the attaced building on the west of the new Arena is the Gym which will be reconstructed. and the swimming facility is at the west of it now, but not shown on the rendering.

K League stadiums
This is what I posted in Stadiums and Sport Arenas section. I hope this can be of a little help to foreign friends who want to know more about Korean football stadiums.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ![]() As you know South Korea hosted Worldcup together with Japan in 2002. Nevertheless it looks like to me that there is still very limited information about South Korean football stadiums, compared to European or South American ones on internet and that's why I created this thread. K League is the top professional football league in South Korea and the first professional football league in Asia. It was founded in 1983 with 5 initial members and has continuously expanded to consist of 14 members as of 2008 season. The average attendance of 2007 season was 11,871, which increased by 19.1% from that of the last season 9,966. One characteristic about K League is that there is a team where the entire squad consists of only active soldiers who are accomplishing their military duty with football instead of rifle. Guess which out of 14 teams. I'll let you know the answer when this thread gathers the 100th reply Out of 14 stadiums of K League, 10 are 2002 WC stadiums of which 6 are for football only and 4 are for multi-purpose and I listed them in capacity order especially with WC stadiums marked blue. As you know from the years built of WC stadiums, we built all the stadiums newly for the tournament without having just a single refurbishment or expansion. To the extent of my knowledge this is the first (and maybe last?) case in Worldcup history. I know, of course, some may think that is waste of money indeed, but how about thinking that South Koreans were eager for their stadium development as much? 1. Seoul Worldcup Stadium - Capacity : 66,806 - Club : FC Seoul, Korean National Team - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : 56 - Remark : It is the largest football-specific stadium in Asia, followed by Saitama Stadium whose capacity is 63,700 and was listed in '10 most beautiful stadiums in the world' by a football magazine World Soccer in 2003 image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Panoramic View http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3085/...d331c761_o.jpg 2. Daegu Stadium - Capacity : 66,422 - Club : Daegu FC - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : 12 - Remark : Besides being a host venue of 2002 WC, it was also the main stadium for Daegu Summer Universiade held in 2003 image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 3. Busan Asiad Main Stadium - Capacity : 53,769 - Club : Busan I'Park - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : None - Remark : As you guess from the name, it was the main stadium for 2002 Busan Asian Games as well as one of venues for 2002 WC. In order to bring spectators closer to the pitch, retractable stands with approximately 5,000 capacity have been installed on one end and one side at the cost of €600K in March this year image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Retractable stands were installed on the opposite side of main tribune and on the home supporters sector this year. Incheon Munhak Stadium - Capacity : 50,256 - Club : Incheon United - Built : 2002 - Suite Box : 61 - Remark : The roof is made of teflon with the thickness of 0.76mm and is the largest membrane structure in the world, according to the stadium official homepage. Groundbreaking for constructing 20K football-specific arena happened last month and the new arena whose provisional name is Sungui Arena is expected to be completed in 2010 image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() It has a wedding hall inside image hosted on flickr ![]() View from the wedding hall image hosted on flickr ![]() (Sungui Arena - New homeground for Incheon Utd) image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Panoramic View http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3292/...4506b920_o.jpg 5. Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium - Capacity : 44,474 - Club : Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : 13 - Remark : It is a part of Ulsan Athletics Park which includes swimming pool, tennis courts, inline skating area, shooting range along with being ecological resting place for citizens with beautiful lake, rose garden, lawn square, fountains, ecological learning center, outdoor concert venue etc image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Panoramic View http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3100/...1fec559d_o.jpg 6. Suwon Worldcup Stadium - Capacity : 43,959 - Club : Suwon Samsung Bluewings - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : 23 - Remark : It is the only stadium in South Korea which got voluntary donations from citizens during construction and in honor of the donators, their names and addresses are carved on the back of seats image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Panoramic View http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2384/...8ba72156_o.jpg 7. Jeonju Worldcup Stadium - Capacity : 42,477 - Club : Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : 8 - Remark : It is thought to be a stadium which has the best night landscape in South Korea image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 8. Daejeon Worldcup Stadium - Capacity : 40,535 - Club : Daejeon Citizen - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : 20 - Remark : It is the only stadium in South Korea which has semi-retractable roof. In non match days, the roof is completely opened in order to give as much sunlight to the grass as possible image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 9. Gwangju Worldcup Stadium - Capacity : 40,245 - Club : Gwangju Sangmu Bulsajo - Built : 2002 - Suite Box : None - Remark : It is known as Guus Hidink Stadium on some foreign stadium sites image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 10. Jeju Worldcup Stadium - Capacity : 34,000 - Club : Jeju United - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : None - Remark : During 2002 WC, it had the capacity of 42,256 including a hemispherical temporary stand with approximately 8,000 seats on the second tier of east tribune. After the tournament, they were moved to other small stadium in 2004. So, the current capacity of Jeju Worldcup Stadium is 34,000 image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() The hemispherical 2nd tier stand was to be moved to other stadium in the very planning stage because the stadium is located in a city too small to support 42K capacity. The location is Seogwipo City and its population is only 150,000 image hosted on flickr ![]() The temporary stand was removed and the seats there were moved to a small stadium called 'Kangchanghak Stadium' in 2004, which reduced the capacity from 42,256 to 34,000 image hosted on flickr ![]() Kangchanghak Stadium after getting the removed seats from Jeju Worldcup Stadium installed image hosted on flickr ![]() 11. Changwon Multi-use Stadium - Capacity : 30,000 - Club : Gyeongnam FC - Built : 1993 - Suite Box : None - Remark : As you see in the aerial picture below, it is a part of sports complex which includes gymnasium, swimming pool, roller skating area, Korean archery range. Changwon Football Center including a 15K football-specific field is under construction now image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() (Changwon Football Center including new homeground for Gyeongnam FC) image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 12. Pohang Steelyard - Capacity : 25,000 - Club : Pohang Steelers - Built : 1990 - Suite Box : None - Remark : It is the first football-specific stadium and one of two private-built stadiums in South Korea (The other is Gwangyang Football Stadium. Both of them were built by the club's owner POSCO which is the third largest steel producer in the world). Fyi, like in many other countries, it is not allowed legally to own a stadium privately in our country, so the club operates the stadium by way of leasing back in the long term after donating to the state. Fxxxing Korean bureaucracy ![]() ![]() . The same applies to Gwangyang Football Stadium too image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 13. Gwangyang Football Stadium - Capacity : 20,009 - Club : Chunnam Dragons - Built : 1992 - Suite Box : None - Remark : It is famous for keeping the pitch in best condition together with Pohang Steelyard, which is considered to be a consequence of possessing their own stadium image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() 14. Tancheon Multi-use Stadium - Capacity : 16,000 - Club : Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma - Built : 2001 - Suite Box : None - Remark : Construction for putting a roof onto the stadium will begin within the year image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() (Renovation Plan - Scheduled to start in September 2008) image hosted on flickr ![]() Panoramic View http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3085/...1c8d30a8_o.jpg Last edited by Carrerra; July 12th, 2008 at 08:50 PM. |

One addition to Seoul Worldcup Stadium.
Worldcup Fountain in Han River has the highest waterjet in the world. It skyrockets up to the height of 202 meters. Of course the figure 202 is, as you guess, intended to have some connection with 2002 WC. 2002 meters would be ideal but that's impossible with the contemporary technology ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr

Photo collection of the 2nd leg of K League playoff finals played at Suwon Worldcup Stadium(Nicknamed "Big Bird") on Dec 8 in South Korean local time. Suwon Samsung Bluewings won the K League trophy of the year, defeating FC Seoul 3:2 on aggregate - 1:1 on the 1st leg & 2:1 on the 2nd leg.
41,044 people came to Big Bird to watch the game despite the cold weather which was as low as -3 degree celcius and the heavy snow which falled until 2 hours before the kickoff. The highlight of the game was the snow which began to fall from 5 minutes before the final whistle was blown and many people thought it is the celebration from the heaven. Congratulations to Suwon Samsung Bluewings and its fans! image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ image hosted on flickr

Can't believe Suwon pulled it off. Any team with Cha at the helm automatically begins a goal down.
Seoul should have won it at Sangam, but Dejan kept on tripping over himself in 1v1 situations with the fatty goalkeeper. Seoul's definitely the team for the future with Ki Song Yong and Lee Chung Yong terrorizing defenses for years to come...unless very possible European moves are in the future for two. image hosted on flickr ![]() love the girl yawning in the front row. also, there are some beasts in that crowd. Anyways, good turn out. If only more people were passionate about the game, and not just when the national teams plays. But I wonder, how many people would have shown up if Seoul weren't playing Suwon, about the only rivalry that matters in the league. |
