Crazy that this bridge is only build because the road that connects the village of Valens with Bad Ragaz is avalanche prone.

A good reason, IMHO.

A new preferred alignment of the Glattalautobahn has been chosen by the Zürich council. It will bypass a congested stretch of A1. When it will be constructed is anyone's guess. They're talking about 'after 2040'.

The blue alignment was preferred up until now. The red alignment is the new preferred route.

After 2040? I wouldn't take such plans too seriously. Way too many things can change in 25 years. One possibility: manual driving on public highways outlawed from 2035 drastically reducing congestion levels.

An interesting piece of Swiss road: Viaduktstrasse, the northern one of the two bridge-roads over Sihlsee, an artificial lake created by a dam in the Sihl river.

I took these pics in the middle of the bridge in March 2015. The lake surface was still mostly frozen.
The road looks as if two cars had almost no space to pass next to one another - but it's quite easily possible. Trucks are banned from using the bridge section.

1. Looking eastward, direction Willerzell

2. Southward onto the lake, the southern bridge (cca. 5km distance) is not visible in the haze.

3. ... and westward, back in direction Einsiedeln.

That's northwards. In the south you would see mountains. (Wikipedia picture) and the second bridge would be easy visible despite the mist.

Indeed, mixed that up so here's the photo looking south. The southern bridge was visible in vivo, but on the photo it almost disappears.

Also they should split the motorway towards the city and towards the ring already at Dübendorf. Between Neuguet entry and the split of Zürich-Ost there is a lot of congestion caused by last second lane changers.

Google Street View coverage has been updated in Switzerland. New areas are now available too.

Hello everyone

I am sure these pictures exist already but I thought it might be easier to just ask.

I will be driving this summer from Frankfurt to Geneva, what kind of roads should I expect? Good scenery?

You'll be driving across A2/A1. That's not really a spectacular route in terms of scenery. You'll see some of the Jura Mountains near the Belchen Tunnel, but there are no snow-capped mountains near that route.

In addition, Basel - Bern and Lausanne - Genève are busy motorways. You can expect some congestion if you drive on a Saturday in July, though not as bad as the Gotthard Tunnel mayhem.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll also be traveling from Milan to Frankfurt, would this be a more scenic route?

I'll be going to Geneva on a Wednesday or Thursday.. Maybe wrong forum for this question.. But is Geneva worth going too? I'm going to Monaco and decided that stopping somewhere for a couple of days might be a good idea. Geneva seemed convenient. I'm 27, not looking for a huge party scene, but don't want to be bored. I'll be solo as well.

Lastly, I'll be renting a car in Frankfurt and j understand that I need some kind of VAT sticker.. Do the rental companies usually provide that for you? Or do I need to buy this somewhere on my own?

Again, not sure if this is the right place to ask, so apologies in advance

On the Milan-Frankfurt trip, you could also consider Swiss A2 and then A13 through the San Bernardino tunnel -it's a very scenic route.

You might consider taking the A12/A9 from Bern to Lausanne instead of the A1. Maybe a little detour but closer to the alps and nice views to Lake Geneva

I only have been in the city of Geneva once. It is certenly a nice city, but I prefer Lausanne.

Lausanne has so spectacular views.

Bear in mind that the Lausanne - Geneva motorway is likely the most heavily speed-trapped section in Switzerland, with a speed camera every 5 kms or so. These come in different shapes, some on the center divider, some on the right side.
This section has also one of the heaviest traffic volumes, as it is the only motorway connection between Geneva and the rest of CH.

Geneva itself? Most international Swiss city, with 2/3 of its residents with foreign roots. Famous jet d'eau in the lake. Many UN and international organizations.

There is no VAT sticker. Do you mean the environment disc (Umweltplakette)? That will be on the car. Or the Swiss motorway toll sticker? That may also be on it if someone had already driven there with it, but it is not automatically provided by the company.
